The first and most important thing is gameplay and playability. Even with the smaller scope and pace than previous Wargame titles, you will be spending 98% of the round at the level where you see units as icons only.

Of course, but you know to see your opponents heavy assets going up in flames like this is incredibly satisfying..

And you know, might encourage people to not to stay at max zoom all the time...
Otherwise you can argue that we don't need any visuals at all since nobody is ever looking at them.. And the game can be just "icons only"

Well, the thing is why would you want to encourage not playing at max zoom? I mean, you will have the best results by playing at a fairly high zoom level. <.< Only in singleplayer the graphics really matter, in multiplayer people are gonna be way too busy managing their units quickly to respond to the smart human opponent.

Anyhow, given to what I'm used to from the Wargame titles, I figure every vehicle will just explode, leaving a burning husk. That's how it has been so far and I doubt that'll change, not because I do not believe in progress, but because it would be unnecessary effort to make it look better than that.

Well I don't claim its very important and anything.. In the game in the video it's not ultimately necessary aswell .. Neither its necessary to see bullet casings from small arms, you rarely see them in gameplay..But they are there ;)

But it increases atmosphere a lot and overall realistic feel, especially since we got rid off healthbars now, we can add now different kinds of "kills" rng based..
It's simply something nice to have and I'd like the game to expand in such areas..
Little details are always nice to notice

Burning husks only would be quite sad actually.. But I imagine there is more as crews seem now be able to bail the vehicle, there is nothing that can bail from a burned husk I'd say..

I think with the smaller scale... we will get a bit more detail... just look at the screenshot of the bomb run: the smoke effects are much better!
