I have CK DV 2.1, and I was finally intent on going through a full game while forming a new Roman Empire, but in 1189...bam. Fatal error (and just as I managed to squeeze out a male heir from a 29 year old wife who would inheit all of Spain!). I've reloaded from 1185 and multiple times I've encountered a fatal error, this time much sooner in just a month or two :/...What's wrong with it???? >.<

Make sure you are using the most recent beta patch. As there are many patches that says "version 2.1beta". I bought the complete pack, and though it says "2.1beta" from the start, it's not the most recent beta patch.
 
I've found that with all the patches and upgrades, the game is much more stable than without them. So definitely follow the advice of those who posted before.

Also, make sure you save frequently so you can go back further and try to prevent such things from happening, although this may be difficult to do.
