Uh, they work fine if you are using the 2.4.5 beta patch.

Aegon's conquest is my favorite :p but Roberts Rebellion can be fun as one of the Targs. I also love love love playing as Aegon VI in AFFC. Oh and a dance of dragons! Even though it is a little too easy to win.

I really like the "Dance of Dragons", lot's of bloody dragon fun. Awesome air duels are in the pack and burning castles and that like. Plus you can side with Rhaenyra or Aegon.
"Robert's rebellion" is also fun, lot's of cannon characters and Robert Baratheon naturally ;)
"Aegon's conquest" is pretty ok, can be cool uniting Westeros and as Aegon and his succesor building Kings Landing, the road networks etc.
Didn't really play "Conquest of Dorne", can't say much, but it sounds cool.

I tend to avoid the AFFC and ACOK start dates because the War for the Dawn not working causes me to get spammed with calls to arms (seriously Jon, I love you like the brother you are, but I already killed their doomstack; you can totes handle this one, k?).

Robert's Rebellion is nicely fleshed out with cannon characters. After the Spring is nice if you just want a peaceful, reasonably canon game without having massive wars getting in the way. As noted, Dance of Dragons is dragon central.

Am I the only one who prefers to start as some lesser noble like Glover of Deepwood motte or Wyl Borrell? They both have references in the book :)

Anyone has more lords like these?

Almost all the Westerosi dukes (and many of the counts) in A Clash of Kings are "historical" (and most of the ones in Robert's Rebellion). There was an "interesting characters thread" at one point; not sure where it went. I remember mentioning Bold Jon Roxton in the Dance of the Dragons and Orton Merryweather from the book start dates as two count-level rulers of interest.

I'll assume you've read all the books, so no worrying about spoilers; you can look at some of the in-game lists of "interesting characters," especially in the later start dates (for example, a reasonably prominent book character is playable in AFFC as the Lord of Stokeworth).

Not the first books so I can't say what lord is in the books and who is not. But I have almost finished the last book, so no real spoilers for me ^^

Will be hard for me to claim other countries. I never liked stealing counties from historical dynasties in CKII, so it won't be any different here x)
