Okay, playing my second real game now in DV 2.1(whatever the beta patch is) as Salerno, it's about 1090 in the game, first ruler is dead, I've been playing as his child for 12 years now, he's 15 now. Still only Salerno and I conquered Menorca earlier since it was the only independent muslim state left, since the hautevilles beat me to Sicily. Right before my original count, Gisulf, died, the Hautevilles attacked, and I submitted to them as a vassal for peace. Years go by, Guiscard dies, Roger Borsa and my new count Abbondanzio become friends, as well as a bunch of other Hautevilles, and some dukes too actually. Borsa makes himself king of Sicily eventually, and actually made me duke of Salerno. A few years later, with great relations, he attacks me for some reason. I'd gotten the rebellious trait when my count was just vassalized earlier, in an event that made him friends with the count of Benevento because both were Italian culture against Borsa's Norman, but lost the rebellious trait later in another event about being friends with Borsa. Anyway, I got some mercs and actually managed to beat borsa and quickly siege and take Naples, and actualy got a peace, and am independent again.

SO the questions.

1. Why did he go to war with me? He had claims on me but I our relations were great and he was a friend.
2. I have claims on Taranto, and Budapest, the budapest one I doubt I'll push for, the Taranto I'm wondering how I can go about that, my allies have not once yet helped in any war I've had, and I was allied with some powerful duchies who could have handled the Hautevilles. Anytime I go to war with someone their entire possible train of potential allies comes to their defense, even for a lone outpost county, while my allies never help with anything.
3. Should I change the power or anything in my proviinces? I gave the burghers almost 50% power with the rest evenly split in Salerno for a while, but figured I wasn't getting much more income, like .2 gold extra, and had a bad army of no knights and lots of light infantry and heavy infantry. Like 400 heavy, 800 light, the rest mixed about even between archers and light cav to get about 2100 troops. In Menorca I gave clergy full power as the province is absolutely useless now but I want it as a base to start crusading into Spain.
4. Burgos is a crusade target, but is owned by a christian nation, why is the crusade not over?
5. Short of this, what else is there really to do? I'm too small to really take on anyone or crusade as of yet, the hautevilles are still to powerful for me and will probably attack again eventually. I just don't know how to actually gain more power in the position I'm in.

I think the AI declares war on you if it has a claim on you, no matter what. On crusades, they end with an event which fires eventually. I've had one game where I conquered Jerusalem for over a year, and the crusade still wasn't finished.

If you want to know exactly what settings give what army read:

4. Burgos is a crusade target, but is owned by a christian nation, why is the crusade not over?

The Crusade ends by event. The event is *more likely* to fire if the crusade target is conquered by a christian. The event is more likely to fire if the surrounding provinces of the crusade target are owned by christians.

5. Short of this, what else is there really to do? I'm too small to really take on anyone or crusade as of yet, the hautevilles are still to powerful for me and will probably attack again eventually. I just don't know how to actually gain more power in the position I'm in.

Take it slow. Starting as a mere count is the slowest start you can have - and to me the most interesting as you have to achieve everything yourself. If in such a game my ruler manages to gain 1 additional county that´s a 100% gain ^^
Wait for events to give you claims that you can take. Wait for your enemies to already be in a war before you strike. Best is if your enemy has marched all his armies in a crusade to the other side of the map and then declare war and siege his home ;-)

Well I played like ten more years and so far no wars with Sicily again yet. Ruler finally came of age, and things are going pretty good now other than he keeps getting bad traits like reckless and such, but he got the +8 intrigue trait, and his brother has brilliant strategist, and is Martial 16, which frees up my former martial who was better at 17, but has my best stewardship of 13, so I'm making decent money now. Also got a claim on cagliari and vassalized them. Still waiting on Menorca to convert, been in constant rebellion for like 25 years since I took it with no conversion.

Ok I have another thing now. Finally got Menorca to convert, took over Gabes, Tripolitania, and Djerba?, vassalized Corsica and Arborea pledged vassalage to me after I made myself Duke of Sardinia. But then some muslim kingdom attacked my vassals, trying to defend them, my vassals immediately declared peace for just indemnities, and I got stuck fighting them for a while to save my African provinces. During that time, France all a sudden declares war and steal Menorca, I shall have to get horrible revenge on them later. Not like it's much loss but still pisses me off, Menorca was a waste of time I found. Anyway, after those wars, my vassals all started declaring independence. I beat Cagliari, revassalized, then Corsica broke away, beat them, then arborea, by the time I was done with that Cagliari broke away again, some how their tiny army of like 600 men destroyed my just summoned 2400 man army and severely wounded my ruler.

He's now been stuck doing nothing for like 6 years from that, can a character recover from a severe wound? His brother came and killed the treacherous vassal after and I felt bad then and left the guy's 1 year old son as vassal. But what I don't get is why they keep breaking away. They were all 100% loyal with the lowest a +2.5 modifier. Also had good relations, decent piety and fairly high prestige, and a respectable reputation, don't get it.

One last thing, my ruler's son has an inheritance on the Duchy of Bavaria. So my good intrigue ruler sent a bunch of assassins to murder the duke's heirs and leave my son ready to take over in a few years so I can keep tabs on him for a little longer. What I don't get is even with an intrigue difference of 18 my assassins were discovered murdering babies. My ruler with spy master has 36 intrigue. Count of the province where the heirs were was only 18 with spymaster. I can see being caught when killing a duke, but not some children. And also, just to check, I killed the duke after saving and even though my son was next in line before i killed him, some random family member came out of no where to be named Duke. Why? I think it was a glitch because I tried it again after a while and it worked right.

As far as i know and experienced myself..

severe wound - can heal depends on health and age and probably amount of courtiers you have

breaking away vassals - depends on diplomacy, culture difference and traits
(traits of your ruler and traits of vassals rulers, realm disruption events as many others, gets worse with DVIP and BOPACK)
intrigue stuff - have only experienced that with the DVIP Mod, shit happens ;)

Only as far as i know, its probably in the event files. I havent checked those.
Anybody actually knows ?
