Pre War: 1937-1939

Royal%20Marines.jpg

Faced with the specter of rising Fascist aggression, the staunchly conservative Canadian government determined in 1937 that war with the fascists was inevitable; the only thing in question was where and when the war would ensue.
Japanese conquests in China, coupled with the unexpected alliance of the heretofore peaceful Dutch state with Nazi Germany and Totalitarian Italy, it was clear that preparations must be made for war, and right soon.

The first order of the cabinet however was a concentrated program to increase the limited Canadian industrial base. This was achieved not by quasi-socialist government sponsored initiatives, as was the case to the south in the liberal Roosevelt administration, but by a series of contracted free-market programs, coupled with strong tax incentives for heavy industry. In parallel with this, efforts were made to inform the populace of the danger of coming war, and the need for self-sacrifice lest our mother England succumb to Fascist domination.

By 1939, after the ill-advised Munich Agreement championed by the arch-sniveler Neville Chamberlain, wiser minds in Canada knew that war in our time was immanent, and the emphasis was switched from industrial expansion to military production. The new Battle-class destroyers, the fruit of a joint technological effort between Canada and the UK, were ordered in a series of 16 4-ship flotillas, to counter the vast numbers of submarines being produced in Hamburg and Amsterdam. In addition, multiple divisions were added to the Canadian Army, well supported with artillery and engineering brigades. Also, a in a daring re-organization of the Canadian Military, the 1st Royal Canadian Marine Division was organized and along with 6 divisions of the Canadian army, based in Darwin, Australia as a counterweight to Dutch and Japanese Imperialism. And in a very controversial move, in Jan 1939, the RCN laid down the keels of the Warrior and the Magnificent, a pair of 20 thousand ton Fleet carriers that would form the backbone of a new Canadian blue-water fleet capable of fighting, albeit on a limited basis, against the finest navies in the world...

Pre-War Planning: Jan-Aug 1939

The Canadian High Command knew war was coming, it was just a matter of when and where. Battle plans had been drawn up for various scenarios, but it was decided that unpredicability must be our ally, as strength in numbers was not, nor was superior technology. It was resolved that the most strategic use of our limited forces would be a strike at the Dutch East Indies, working in combination with the Anzac forces to place a stranglehold on the Axis' vital source of rubber, petrol, and other crucial necessities.

Excerpt from Kenneth Stuart's address to the war department, June 1939:

"Wars, my friends, are decided by many factors: Numbers, training, equipment, technique, willpower, intelligence, sheer èlan...but the overriding reality of modern warfare is that it is a war decided by logisitics. To realize our goals, this essential fact must be at the forefront of our thinking."

Still, the Atlantic theatre was not forgotten, hundreds of German and Dutch subs would undoubtedly be prowling the seas soon after the war's inception. The British navy was somewhat short on modern destroyers, still using mainly WWI vintage ASW vessels, and they requested some help. Accordingly, in the summer of '39, a squadron of six brand new destroyer flotillas was dispatched and based in Liverpool.

September 1939: Germany Invades Poland!

September 1939: The Atlantic Theatre:

August 30: The Axis, consisting of Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the puppet states of Ethiopia, Somalia, Slovakia, and Finland, declared unilateral war on the Allies on August 30, 1939. Immediately following this, Yugoslavia and Denmark joined the Allies. Also, the enigmatic Dictator Stalin declared war on Persia, freed from threat by the infernal M-R pact.

September 3: Major Engagment by the 2nd ASW Squadron with a Dutch wolfpack in the Faroes Gap results in a crushing victory for the gallant RCN. A dozen submarines are reported sunk with many more damaged, with only minor damage to several of our DD's. The survivors flee and are pursued, but they escape into the grey of the North Sea. Our ships return to Liverpool for a breif refit before resuming patrols of the Faroes Gap region.

September 4: USSR annexes the Baltic States.

September 19: Malta falls to Italian Amphibious Landings.

September 21: Poland falls to the Germans, and is divided with the trecherous Soviets.

September 22: Denmark is annexed by Nazi Germany.
