Ok, as Austria (or any other catholic nation), that has switched to reformed Catholic (not to be confused with reform protestant), you can take an enemy's capital and as part of the peace negotiation, force them to convert back to Catholic.

ALso, as Turkey, you can take a Shiite capital and force them to go back to Sunni.

Two questions/comments:

1) When I take an enemy capital, the game no longer lets me demand provinces anymore...the only option available to you is to convert their religion...and it really annoys the piss outta me. Other than waiting for the enemy nation to beg for peace from you (or avoiding their capital altogether), does anyone know of a better way??

2) Has anyone experimented much with this?? When you, as Austria, go into the Netherlands, take their capital and force them back to Catholic...does it force all of the people in the nation to become Catholic as well?

3) I assume the answer to #2 is "no" which leads to my next question...by forcing Netherlands back to Catholic, that may cause rebellion problems for the Netherlands because their state religion doesn't match. I say it "may" cause problems because the sliders can always accomodate more than one religion. My question is...can a "converted" country simply agree to the terms of peace and then immediately switch their religion back as soon as the enemy forces withdrawel? Does the AI do this?

4) Other than the victory points, what do you gain from this. I can see how you can cause some turmoil by making the state religion differ from the people's religion...if the AI is able to switch back to their original religion, I can see how this strategy would cause them to lose all of their stability (because of the switchback)...but I really don't see how it is all that useful.

5) As Turkey, can you force a Catholic nation to become Sunni? Or does the conversion only work on nations that were originally of your type of religion?

Thanks to any/all answers!!

Ok - can't answer all but I can attempt to answer some.

1) I believe if you simply refuse the offer to convert the enemy, you will be then given the op'ty to do then normal tribute screens - at least that's what happened in my Turkey vs. Persia campaign - convert option screen came up, declined and then was given the option to annexx em (had all their prove'nces)

2) the people remain whatever their prov'nce religion is only the state religion changed

3) I would assume they could but I've never done the forced conversion so not sure of if they do/would.

4) other than what you mentioned, the only other benefit I could see is it might allow you to diplomatically annex the nation. (to diplo annex you must have a royal marriage, to have a RM you must be of the same religion - I think -)

5) don't know bout the Cath to Sunni - don't believe so - when I conquered Ragusa, a catholic nation, I didn't get the conversion screen.

Correct.

Also, if you would have the option to annex them in full too, you would first have to decline that, then decline the conversion to finaly get to the "normal" peace screen.

It's not supposed to be able to do it for 5 years (while the peace treaty is in affect), but there have been reports that ceratin countries sometimes still do it (The Dutch IIRC). I however have never seen it myself.

Other than the victory points, what do you gain from this

The ability to diplo annex them later on (gives a lot lower BB and relations then a military forced annexation)

I was very aggressive as CR catholic Austria just for the good of the faith (reason enough :D) but the most it took for them to convert back was 3 years. They always got a declaration of war once the 5 year period was up. Arses are basically breaking peace agreements!
