A fort's tooltip says that exceeding the fort infrastructure capacity is possible, but comes at great expense.
What expense, to be exact? Can't find any specified maluses in the territory, nor the province. Is it possible to see this somewhere?

Exactly you are paying substantial more per additional fort level above your capacity. Of you really need the forts you can keep them but it will cost you. You can also increase the fort infrastructure capacity by the relevant provincial development using your PI, by getting to specific military traditions or by certain military innovations.

EDIT: see post below, the system updates after one month tick. Strange enough, I went to check the economy tab to confirm this increase of maintenance cost and I was surprised to see that Macedon does not pay any maintenance for the forts in the capital province and there is no increase whatsoever when you go over the limit in the other provinces like Chalkidiki with the two forts in Philippoi and Amphipolis that go 6/5 fort capacity. Can anyone confirm this?

EDIT: first fort in the capital is free:

I thought it would be maintenance related too. Nuceria and Plestia are both level 2 forts. Nuceria's province is over the limit by 2 (7/5) whereas Plestia's province is under it by 1 (4/5). They're still costing the same amount though. Or am I missing something?

Ok, It is working as intended, but we have to wait one month to see the effect on the forts maintenance:

Now the forts where you are over 1 point your infraestructure limit cost you +25% (Amphipolis and Philippoi) and so on with every point you go over your limit.

Hat tip to @x8ight that told me to wait one month.

I realize my mistake now. I had lowered the fort maintenance. Interestingly, at this level, fort infrastructure doesn't do anything. Now, with maintenance at normal, the province over the limit has to pay more per fort.
