War of the Five Kings

WARNING, Game of Thrones Season 1 and 2 Spoilers
iron-throne-hbo1-650x404.jpg

Eddard Stark is dead, executed as a traitor by King Joffrey Baratheon, and with him any chance of peace. Robb Stark, Lord of Winterfell and son of the late Lord Eddard has called the banners of the North and marched south to free his father. Tywin Lannister, the King's Grandfather marched east into the Riverlands to defeat the northern forces of Lord Robb but at the Battle of the Whispering Wood Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer, son of Tywin Lannister and King Joffrey's uncle was captured and his army destroyed at the subsequent Battle of the Camps. Despite defeating the Northern army under Roose Bolton Lord Tywin was forced to retreat to Harrenhal after his son's defeat.

Due to Eddard Stark's revelation that Joffrey and his brother and sister are abominations born of incest the late King Robert's brothers Renly, Lord of Storm's End and Stannis, Lord of Dragonstone, have called their banners proclaiming themselves King in Joffrey's place. Renly along with his own troops from the Stormlands has, through a marriage with Margaery Tyrell, secured the backing of Highgarden and the Reach. Stannis meanwhile controls the majority of the Royal Fleet as well as a small force of troops from Dragonstone. Facing this King Joffrey has a force of sellswords and the Gold Cloaks of King's Landing to hold the city.

In the Vale the sickly Lord Robert's mother, Lysa remains Regent and is intent on keeping the Vale neutral, to the South in Dorne Prince Doran Martell waits and watches while in the Iron Islands Lord Balon Greyjoy prepares to retake the Driftwood Crown and the title of King.

Overview

"War of the Five Kings" is, as the name suggest a Political and military game based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. This game will take place on the continent of Westeros and it will concentrate on the war of the Five Kings. I will be keeping stats as minimalistic as possible and encouraging players to post lots of IC. In Character posts will be the heart of this game and if I deem a player does not IC enough they may be removed from the game (This goes for all players but especially the Great Houses). While it is not required that players know the story it is highly recommended as I will assume players know things such as the strength of various fortresses as well as the wealth of the houses. Those players who have not read the books or watched the series should use the various wiki's to ensure they know what is happening.

Players will be able to play as all the major houses as well as their vassals. While the major houses will be able to control their vassals troops (normally) the major Lords will need to grant troops to be commanded by their vassals unless they keep their entire army together at all times. The Kings and major Lords will also need to keep their vassals happy, lest they betray them and switch their support to another. I will also be keeping players relatively in character. So Stannis and Renly won't become best friends and Robb Stark won't suddenly become a master of intrigue.

Orders and Updates

All houses will be able to send orders and if bannermen of a major Lord are made commander of an army they will send orders for that army and can either obey or disobey their Lord's orders, of course actively betraying him may result in the troops not of the leader's house refusing to follow. As this game will concentrate on the war of the Five Kings I encourage players to send detailed war orders explaining what they want to do and how they want to do it. When I receive all orders for a particular region of the war I will write an update about it, detailing what happened as well as how it happened. While I will role dice to see how well orders go I will also factor in how good those orders are as well as other things like terrain or the leader. Updates will constitute 3 months in game however I will also post mini updates quite often if I receive all necessary orders. Players will also be allowed to plot against their enemies however should a plot fail the repercussions could be severe, the more backers a plot has the higher chance of success it has, the position of these backers is also a contributing factor.

Characters

Any landed character from the aSoIaF series may be played as long as they are on the continent of Westeros (so no Daenarys, at least at the start). The format for choosing a character is:

Name:
House:
Location:
Liege:

so a Mace Tyrell player would look like this:

Name: Mace
House: Tyrell
Location: Highgarden
Liege: Renly Baratheon

When you claim a character it is necessary you know their personality so that you can IC them properly and I am not forced to intervene. Due to Joffrey being underage I have decided to make him an NPC with control of King's Landing being fought for between Cersei and Tyrion. The Night's Watch will be NPC.

Other Stuff

- Do not get angry about IC decisions in OOC. If you have a problem with the IC behaviour of another player then PM me personally.
- The GM reserves the right to overrule any public decrees, plots or player action.
- The GM reserves the right to remove players who are not actively participating in the game

Credit for this game goes to Plank of Wood who provided the base of this game with his game "Seven Kingdoms, Five Kings"

Official statement from the Lordship of the Arbor, vassal of Highgarden

Lord Stannis of Dragonstone has spread accusations of bastardise against Joffrey Baratheon and his brethren. I do not value slander, and unless such accusations are proven, I will consider them unfounded. The demise of King Robert the first of his name is truly saddening, and so is Eddard Stark's unfortunate death. Our condolences go to their families, but our efforts go to the cause of peace. The Arbor, for once, won't join Highgarden in its war as we believe peace should be upheld. There are multiple Baratheon claimants, and only one throne. But we believe a fitting agreement could be found, satisfying every party and keeping the realm intact.

However, we will protect the coasts of the Reach, and this is why we ask our liege and Lord Hightower to give us the command over all fleets of the Reach, to ensure a good defence in these troubled times. Surely they understand why we are temporarily unable to help them offensively, and will see the wisdom in my words.

Finally, I believe the time has come for my sons to come back home. A ship will be sent to King's Landing to bring them home safely. I assume no one will seek to harm it, out of respect for my neutrality.

Paxter Redwyne, Lord of the Arbor

House Greyjoy

House Greyjoy of Pyke is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. It rules over the Iron Islands, a harsh and bleak collection of forbidding islands off the west coast of Westeros, from the castle of Pyke on the island of the same name. Their sigil is a golden kraken on a black field, and their house motto is "We Do Not Sow."

Greyjoy_coat_sigil.png

The House descends from the Grey King, a legendary figure from the Age of Heroes. The Greyjoys became the lords of the Iron Isles during the Targaryen Conquest: after Aegon I extinguished House Hoare, he allowed the ironborn to choose who would have primacy over them. They chose Vickon Greyjoy and his line. The Greyjoys have ruled ever since, from their formidable castle of Pyke. The ironborn, however, did lose the Riverlands, which were granted to Edmyn Tully and his descendents.

Thus relegated to their dismal homeland and constrained by the king's peace, the Greyjoys have kept themselves distant from the other Great Houses, rarely taking part in events on the mainland (which they call the "green lands"). At various times they have tried to return to their ancient practices of raiding the western coastlines.

Six years after holding aloof during Robert's Rebellion, Lord Balon Greyjoy led his own rebellion against the Iron Throne, declaring himself King of the Iron Islands. He was defeated, his fleet burned and his two eldest sons Rodrik and Maron were slain during the war. His last son Theon was given as a hostage and ward to Lord Eddard Stark and he again swore fealty to House Baratheon of King's Landing.

Since their revolt, the Greyjoys have been as insular as ever. With Theon living in the green lands, Lord Balon raised his daughter Asha as his heir. Balon exiled his brother Euron when he raped the salt wife of their brother Victarion, Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet. Victarion was forced to kill his wife to retain his honor. Since then Euron has sailed the world aboard the Silence, reaving and pillaging, unwelcome in the Isles while Balon still lives. Another brother, Aeron Damphair, had been changed by his experience of washing overboard during the Battle of Fair Isle, and became a priest of the Drowned God.

Balon Greyjoy
h_b5f745fde7b463b9ab783e9db32bf13c

Balon Greyjoy is the head of House Greyjoy of Pyke and is the Lord Reaper of the Iron Islands. He is a follower of the Old Way of the ironborn and desires to bring them back to prominence. Balon is the eldest surviving son of Lord Quellon Greyjoy and a lady of House Sunderly. It is not clear when he was born.

Balon learned to sail when still young and was a very skilled captain. Balon scaled the Flint Cliffs to the Blind Lord's haunted tower when he was ten. By his thirteenth year, he had become an expert oarsman. At fifteen he sailed with Dagmer Cleftjaw to the Stepstones on a reaving, killing his first man and taking his first two salt wives there. By seventeen he captained his own longship.Later he often went raiding and was known for his fierceness and fearlessness.

Balon succeeded his father as Lord Reaper of Pyke when the latter died during a raiding journey. When he returned to Pyke he found out his younger brother, Urrigon, had died of gangrene after being injured in the finger dance. The maester had tried to save the hand of the boy, but his potions had failed and the fourteen-year-old Urrigon lost his life instead. Balon commanded the same treatment be used on the maester, who died along with Balon's stepmother.

Balon is married to Alannys Harlaw, who gave him three sons and a daughter: Rodrik, Maron, Asha, and Theon.

Balon watched as Robert Baratheon overthrew the Targaryens, taking no part in Robert's Rebellion. Balon was quick to seize the chance to revert to the ways of old when he thought that King Robert's recently-gained rule, through conquest, was unstable. Believing Robert would not have the support, the men, or the will to resist, Balon launched his own rebellion and declared himself King of the Iron Islands.

The ironborn won early success when they attacked Lannisport and destroyed its fleet, but Balon's triumph was short lived. His eldest son, Rodrik, died at the walls of Seagard and his fleet and forces were defeated, while his second son, Maron, died while defending Pyke. Balon was forced to accept defeat and bent the knee, re-swearing fealty to the Baratheons, allowing his sole surviving son, ten-year-old Theon, to be taken hostage by Lord Eddard Stark to Winterfell. Balon and his wife, Alannys, grew apart after the deaths of Rodrik and Maron and the taking of Theon.

Theon Greyjoy
h_bf7c5eb883556467b2123b6ad0f14734

Theon Greyjoy is the sole surviving son and heir apparent of Lord Balon Greyjoy. Theon was a young boy of ten when his father's rebellion was crushed and his two brothers, Rodrik and Maron were killed, making him the heir to House Greyjoy and the Iron Islands.

He was taken as a hostage and ward by Lord Eddard Stark and has been raised at Winterfell for nine years since. He was raised with the Stark children and tutored along with them in all disciplines. His relationship with the Starks is respectful, while he considers Robb Stark a close friend and brother.

Asha Greyjoy
h_19a829616af89768d66d1a7b8509b415

Asha Greyjoy is the daughter of Lord Balon Greyjoy and his wife, Alannys and she was raised as Balon's heir, although Theon officially holds that honor. She is fierce and proud, and defies traditional ironborn gender roles by commanding her own ship, the Black Wind, and leading men into battle.

Victarion Greyjoy
h_aa47f4f10e651704524d7fb4cdf86719

Victarion Greyjoy is a member of House Greyjoy and is a younger brother of Lord Balon Greyjoy. The Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet, Victarion's flagship is Iron Victory. He is a capable commander and a fierce warrior in battle, but has a calm demeanor outside of it, thinking of enemies who show bravery with great respect. He is a religious man and wears full plate armor while sailing because he has no fear of drowning.

Victarion recognized the greatness of his older brother, Balon, and followed him loyally by commanding the Iron Fleet during the Greyjoy Rebellion. After the rebellion's end, Victarion continued to serve as Lord Captain faithfully. His brother, Euron, seduced and impregnated Victarion's third wife, which drove Victarion to beat her to death to retain his honor. Only the taboo against kinslaying kept Victarion from killing Euron. He has not married since, nor has he forgiven Euron, who was forced into exile by Balon.

Aeron Greyjoy
h_a1c3bfd0582d88d2155243e16217dfbf

Aeron Greyjoy is the youngest son of the deceased Lord Quellon Greyjoy and Lady Sunderly, and is a younger brother of Lord Balon Greyjoy. As a result of a near-death experience during the Greyjoy Rebellion, Aeron became a priest of the Drowned God, and is now called the Damphair because of his wet hair.

Euron 'Crow's Eye' Greyjoy
h_08a89a2291e10abad06121ec8571994b

Euron Greyjoy is a younger brother of Lord Balon Greyjoy and is known as Crow's Eye. He is captain of the Silence, a ship crewed entirely by mutes whose tongues Euron ripped out.

At the outset of the Greyjoy Rebellion, Euron concocted a plan to sail into Lannisport and burn the Lannister fleet at anchor. The Iron Fleet, commanded by Euron's brother Victarion Greyjoy, followed the plan and successfully destroyed the Westerlands' naval force.

Some time after the war, Euron was sent away from the Iron Islands by Lord Balon Greyjoy as punishment for seducing or raping Victarion's salt wife, and he was warned never to return while Balon was alive. Victarion wanted to kill Euron and would have if not for the taboo against kinslaying.

Since Euron's banishment, the Silence has sailed, pillaged and raped all over the known world.

Iron Islands
iron_islands_by_eternalyoung-d68q8wf.jpg

The Iron Islands is an archipelago in Ironman's Bay, located on the western coast of Westeros, roughly west of the Riverlands, northwest of the Westerlands, and south of the North. The seven major islands are Pyke, Great Wyk, Old Wyk, Harlaw, Saltcliffe, Blacktyde, and Orkmont. The Lonely Light, located eight days sail northwest of Great Wyk, is the most distant of the islands. The Iron Islands is the smallest and least populous of the regions of the Seven Kingdoms.

The Iron Islands are small, barely-fertile rocks with few safe harbours. The seas around the islands are stormy, frequently wreaking havoc with their considerable force.
The islands are ruled from the island of Pyke, the seat of House Greyjoy. Pyke bears an ancient fortress of the same name built atop several natural rocky towers jutting out of the sea. Connected by treacherous rope bridges, it would be a major challenge for any invading army. Pyke once extended as a spur of land like a sword out of the sea, but that outcropping has long since shattered, and it is now in essence three separate isles.

350px-Iron_Islands.jpg

The inhabitants of these harsh isles are known as ironmen to the rest of Westeros, but they call themselves the ironborn. They are men of the sea, and their naval supremacy was once unmatched. They are considered independent, fierce and sometimes cruel. They live in a harsh land and they hold no love for the peoples of the mainland and their soft green ways. The Faith of the Seven of the Andals and the old gods find small favor with the ironborn, as their allegiance is given to their native Drowned God. Many ironborn believe in returning to the Old Way of reaving and paying the iron price.

The Drowned God

The belief system of the Drowned God justifies the ironborn way of life of piracy and raiding. Followers of the Drowned God believe he brought flame from the sea and that he created the ironborn to reave, raid, and pillage. Much of the religion centers around maritime skills and seafaring ability. It is not simply praiseworthy to kill enemies in battle, it is considered a pious act. A youth in the Iron Islands is not considered a man until he has killed his first enemy. The religion also encourages paying the "iron price" instead of the "gold price" -- that is, it is better not to pay or treat for possessions, but to take them by force from the hands of dead enemies.

While to outsiders the Drowned God religion seems like a thinly veiled justification for pillaging and plundering, the ironborn themselves take their religion very seriously, and actually have a fairly well developed cosmology and belief system surrounding it.

Within this belief system, the Drowned God is locked in an age-old struggle against the Storm God. The Drowned God's halls are located beneath the ocean, while the Storm God lives in a castle in the sky with his thunderclouds. The Storm God is constantly trying to send storms to dash ironborn ships against rocks to their ruin.

Resurrection figures prominently in the religion, in the form of being revived from drowning. The Drowned God itself is said to have drowned in the sea, for the sake of the ironborn, but returned to life "harder and stronger". However, drowning is also employed as a method of sacrificing enemies to the Drowned God.

Due to their belief, the ironborn do not fear drowning in the sea. "Godly" ironborn, that is fearless raiders, who drown are believed to be taken to the Drowned God's watery halls to feast on fish and be tended by mermaids for eternity. Thus, whenever a man dies, ironborn say that the Drowned God is in need of a strong oarsman.

Flaming-Stag.png

So it is true what Ned Stark told us in a recently received raven. Treachery and sin reign over the Iron Throne in the name of the so called King Joffrey. Lord Stark, one of the most honorable man in all Westeros, has been assassinated by the Lannisters. And yes, assassinated and not executed, for when a man has been granted pardon and he is later betrayed, it is not justice but a murder. Murdered as our brother Robert, also by the hand of the Lannisters.

And who is to blame of such an evil act? Joffrey, that cruel and mindless kid who wants to set all Westeros on fire. Than son who claims to be King. But he is no King. He is just a creature of a sinful act. Some would say he is the rightful King and the true heir of Robert Baratheon, and they would be right except for one important detail: he is not Robert´s son. Ned Stark knew that, and it is why he was murdered. Look at Joffrey: is he black haired, as all true sons of house Baratheon? No! He shares the same blonde hair as his mother...the same as the Kingslayer.

People of Westeros! Joffrey Lannister is nothing but a bastard who covets the Iron Throne and won´t stop until his bloodthrist has been satisfied! He has given proof of that when he murdered the Hand of his own father, the deceased King of Westeros. And he is no ordinary bastard, but one born out of incest and lies, a son of brother and sister. Such a monster shall be removed from Earth, and so we devote to do.

Therefore, the answer remains easy. Robert Baratheon died without true heirs, as her bitch Queen only gave birth to incestuous and Lannister kids. Therefore, the succession laws are clear: I, Stannis of House Baratheon, I´m the rightful King of Westeros, and so is proved by this document, signed by the deceased King Robert, in which he names Lord Stark as Protector of the Realm, who clearly understood that I was his rightful heir.

The Iron Throne is ours; opose us, and you will perish under our power. Recognize us as your true King, and you will be rewarded as a man of justice.

To Rob Stark, Lord of Winterfell and protector of the North: we understand your rage and your claims of justice. We fought together with your father, and was a good friend of our house, as Baratheons and Starks have always been. Join our cause, and we promise your Father will be avenged, your rights will be respected and your justice rewarded.

We call all our bannermen in our aid, and we instruct ser Davos Seaworth to come to Dragonstone, where he will be named Hand of the King, to discuss our common strategy.

We will prevail. For the night is dark and full of shadows.

Stannis Baratheon the First of His Name, King of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, Lord of Dragonstone, Lord of Storm's End, Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, Warrior of Light, The Lord's Chosen and Son of Fire.

You know I'd make a perfect Joffrey. I got the megalomaniac down already, and I'm German, so the sick-o cruelty will come to me naturally.

OOC: Joffrey is NPC

Name: Doran
House: Martell
Location: Sunspear
Liege: ???????????????????

It is with great honor that i follow my Liege, Stannis Baratheon, first of his name, King of the Andals, Rhoynar and the first men to Dragonstone and graciously accept the honor of being named hand of the king.

Joffrey, born of incest into House Lannister, still claims relation to House Baratheon where there is not. Lord Eddard Stark was a man as just as a man can be, and to doubt his word was to doubt, or to challenge the truth. Stannis, along with the most honorable Jon Arryn had exposed the scandal, before the late hand of the king was murdered by the Lannisters, discovered Joffrey's true heritage, and so did Eddard of house Stark.
The Lannisters have murdered Jon Arryn, Hand of the King and guider of the realm for many years, Robert Baratheon, your former King, and Older Brother to the King, Stannis Baratheon, and Lord Eddard Stark, whose calmness and honor have kept the realm together in its final moments. They did so, to remove all that was righteous, all that was just from court and realm and replace it with shining Lannister Gold.

But do not be blinded, these men, who guided the realm did it, because they were brought up unlike Joffrey. For them, ruling the realm was not a game of children, an amusing pastime, it was their duty, and their sense of honor demanded it from them. The Realm gained them, because Aerys was mad, and born of incest, he caused the realm to bleed. Now another child born of incest sits the iron throne, threatens it with its madness, and the realm is starting to bleed.

Stannis Baratheon is the right man for this realm. Not only does he, unlike the younger brother Renly, engaged in a folly to snatch the crown for himself, in what he regards as an amusing game, have the best claim, but he also has the qualities needed to be a good King. He may not have the shining armor of his brother, or the most splendid smile, but he has been governing this realm for years, has put duty before reward and glory, has put honor and justice above all.
For Stannis, ruling this realm is not only his right, it is his duty. He hasn't been born to the idea of his right to execute people, to rule and sit on the Iron Throne, he regards it as his duty. To save the realm from the Lannisters, and those that wish to tear it apart, to defend honor, and rule as just as just can be.

For me, Davos of House Seaworth, there is only one King, by right and by choice, Stannis Baratheon, the first of his Name.

What about the wildlings? If they are available I would pick Mance Rayder.
If not I will go with Bronze Yohn Royce.

Cersei Lannister

Cersei_Seated_by_jezebel.jpg

"'I waited, and so can he. I waited half my life.' She had played the dutiful daughter, the blushing bride, the pliant wife. She had suffered Robert’s drunken groping, Jaime’s jealousy, Renly’s mockery, Varys with his titters, Stannis endlessly grinding his teeth. She had contended with Jon Arryn, Ned Stark, and her vile, treacherous, murderous dwarf brother, all the while promising herself that one day it would be her turn."

Name: Cersei
House: Lannister
Location: King's Landing
Liege: King Joffrey Baratheon

Summary:

A strikingly beautiful woman, but more importantly, Queen Regent of Joffrey in his minority government. Ever since very young age, Cersei have walked in her father Tywin's ruthless footsteps in regards to politics, and have quite a few successful plots in her resume to show. However, she's an impatient woman, careless, and have shown to be much more capable in terms of gaining power, but not as much efficiency in wielding it. While fiercly defensive of her own children, and an... Unhealthy dose of affection for her twin brother Jaime, she is in terms to others, what one could almost call as cold. It was no secret that her marriage with King Robert Baratheon was strained at best, and there are even some foul rumours regarding his death lurking about, all which is obviously false.

6795c1524743d83a0bfe6e70ba53c5f5b67effe633759752f1902bdd2585a050.jpg

On his deathbed Robert had named Eddard Stark regent until his thirteen year old heir Joffrey would come of age, but the morning after Robert's death, Cersei seized power, denouncing Lord Eddard as a traitor that have conspired against King Joffrey. She has Eddard imprisoned and is named Queen Regent, heading Joffrey's small council.

Cersei only intended to have Eddard convicted of treason and sent to take the black, thus discrediting him and removing him as a factor in the political arena without antagonizing the North, since, as she thought, the warm feelings the Starks always held for the Night's Watch. She arranges a public confession for him on the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor, assuring the High Septon that he will be offered forgiveness and that the holy ground will not be profaned with blood. However, she underestimates Joffrey's willfulness and taste for cruelty. He foolishly ignores her advice and instead orders Lord Stark's immediate execution.
