Despite owning no technologies the FE doesn't know about, the FE exchanged 700 Energy Credits for my Research Agreement. It was very early in the game as well; I had fewer than 4 worlds.
The FE had the Xenophile trait and good relations with me, so I choose to believe they thought my species had 'cajones' and decided to humor the just-hit-ftl Divine Mandate of Dys'Syr in our quest to find Cthulu.
