Freeze when unpausing

I am playing a post campaign game. I am in the year 780 and I also have a giant empire. (over 1000 provinces, more than 40k pops). As I am currently in a war with mega phryia in patch 1.4.2 (because I do not like meander) I suddenly have the problem of the game freezing every time I unpause. Now I am one of those people who play speed 5 and pause to make descisions. Sorry, cant help. But every time I pause the game feezes. I can give orders and do things, but they do not show as done until the game finally catches up.
I dont know what to do. My CPU and memory are fine but my laptop gets really hot. So I turned off every single graphics option but it did nothing. Same problem.

Most likely your save game file is filled up with dead characters. As you are past the game's designed end date 727 AUC this is liable to happen. All you can do is edit them out of the save file.
