Did you install any mods?
Make sure your video card driver is upto date, you have DirectX9.0b installed and your color depth is set to 16BIT.
 
hmm, looks like a note should be posted in the Beta thread.
 
Actually, I don't think it is needed anymore with the new beta patch out.
