frequent crashes in 1860s USA game.

hello, i just got my game today and was playing USA GC. It ran w/ no problems until mid 1860s, when there would be CTDs every 10 min or so. This is very annoying and i'm not sure the cause. This does not help when i reload the save reboot the pc. Even if i save every month, and after ctd, load other saves, it still happens.

This usually happens when i'm in the pop management screen for province or factory management screen for state. Also, i recently made peace w/ France maybe thats a problem. i dont know.

I have SF version, using PAN patch version 1.01(didnt have installation problems or problems w/ other countries). My system specs:
AMD athlon 1.4Ghz
512Mb DDR ram
Asus Geforce 3 gfx card(64mb ram)
windows XP OS
I have all drivers updated, and my hd has plenty of space (fat32, 80Ghz)

Does it happen on the same date, or is it repeatable from the save?

Are you using the VIA motherboard drivers?

it happens repeatedly, even after i reload the save and play to a later date, and reload different saves. I have the ASUS A7m266 and yes, i'm using the latest VIA 4in1 drivers(except the agp, i use amd agp driver, since my mobo has amd southbridge) I have not have problems w/ other games tho. I had ctds w/ my belgium gc, but it happend only once or twice and when i reloaded the save no more problems.

Well you can check the bug forum to see if they are taking save games with repeatable bugs.
However I do know that the VIA drivers are known to be buggy, and it apears that Paradox games brings them out.

Assuming your drivers are all good. The next most likely candidate is your Ram timings. Hop in your Bios and check them out, they are probably in an area called 'advanced chipset features' or somesuch under the headings RAS/CAS/CAS-RAS, set to something like 6-2-2, try changing that to 7-3-3, or 8-4-4. This just slows down the internal timings, it will make your computer a few percent slower but may get rid of your CTD's, if not, just set them back.
