For some reason, my current Rome game is crashing to the desktop frequently. There's no freezing, the game just kicks me out and doesn't even display an error message. It doesn't seem to crash on an exact date, but tends to crash a few days after the attached save game.

I checked for the no_culture bug, but couldn't find anything. In my game, I was playing as Pontus. When a civil war broke out, I decided to switch to playing as the rebels. Whether this is a cause, I don't know.

I've attached the offending save game (excuse the weird title, it was part of a planned AAR), my DxDiag and my Rome settings. I'm using patch 2.31c.

The game has been fine up until now, but something beyond my knowledge is causing the game to fail. I hope someone can identify the problem and maybe eliminate the "bug". If you need any more info, I'll gladly help! :)

First try right-clicking on the game icon on the desktop and set it to run as Administrator, with Desktop Composition disabled. If that doesn't help, edit the settings.txt file as follows:

fullScreen=no
multi_sampling=0
master_volume=-1
renderTrees=no
If that helps at all, you can undo those settings one by one to see which helped.

Ok, thanks, Andrew. I'll try this out in a while and let you know how it goes.

I read on another post that there could be a bug that causes two or more troops to begin construction simultaneously in the same province, which could cause a CTD. I followed the instructions, but wasn't quite sure if there was any abnormalities within the save. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and is feeling kind, maybe they could take a look at my save to check for this problem. I don't want to seem lazy, but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

EDIT: So, I tried running the game as Admin, but with no success. I then edited the settings and this seemed to work. I managed to play from a few months, but the CTD suddenly strikes again. It's a totally random occurence and doesn't trigger on a set date. It's a shame, as this current game is probably my favourite game of Rome so far. :(

Please report the temperatures of the CPU and graphics chips 1/ just before playing, then again 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If you have no way of seeing temps, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.

CTD -- unborn children curse

I have had a recurrent CTD just like the one mentioned here. It will keep crashing on a given date so I open the game file and search for that date and always seem to come across an entry like this:

unborn={
{
mother={
id=594086
type=44
}

father={
id=591547
type=44
}

date="550.10.23"
}
}

when I erase that information the game runs fine past that date (550.10.23) but then invariably will crash again on another date within a few months (or even days --- and THOSE dates have unborn children due for birth, as well).

I cannot find any link to country, province, nationality, etc. in this, but in my game it is ALWAYS linked to the upcoming birth of a child.

can someone fix this? cuz i would really love to play this game without throwing my laptop through the window.

I thought the crash may be linked to temperature, too. I had intentions of downloading Speedfan, but decided to see if deleting the files within "Map/cache". The game then crashed at the "Creating World..." loading screen before the game started proper.

I restored the cache files from my Recycle Bin and reloaded the game, but had the same "Creating World..." crash at start-up. I was convinced that I'd now have to do a complete, clean install of EU: Rome, so before I did, I deleted the files within "Map/cache" one more time. Don't ask why, my mind works in bizarre ways when there is a technical problem.

Strangely, this fixed the "Creating World..." start-up crash and fixed the in-game CTD! I have no idea how I fixed it simply by deleting>restoring>deleting the cache files. I've since played 8+ years more in-game with no problems.

Any ideas how this is possible? :confused: I'm glad the problem is sorted, but I'm confused how I managed it.

Probably the first time you deleted the sub-directories in /map/cache/ whereas the second time you just deleted the files, which is how it is supposed to be done.

Possibly, but I knew not to delete the subfolders and made an effort not to do so. Maybe I just made a mistake. Oh, well, either way, the problem is solved. Thanks for your help anyway, Andrew!
