Inspired by some of the other self-sacrificing EU forum members who have devoted a little of their time to helping others understand the game mechanics, I have listed the number of traders per year for some of the main countries. …In case anyone is interested.

1492-1520; England 10; Spain 1; France 20; Austria 1; Holland 1; Venice 5; Portugal 200; Russia 5; Turk 5;
1560; Eng 25; Spain 1; France 50; Austria 1; Holland 1; Venice 5; Portugal 200; Russia 100; Turk 14;
1615; Eng 100; Spain 100; France 50; Austria 1; Holland 200; Venice 5; Portugal 150; Rus 100; Turk 100;
1665; Eng 100; Spain 5; France 50; Austria 1; Holland 300; Venice 5; Portugal 20; Russia 100; Turk 100;
1700; Eng 200; Spain 5; France 100; Austria 1; Holland 200; Venice 5; Portugal 5; Russia 100; Turk 10;
1760; Eng 200; Spain 5; France 100; Austria 5; Holland 100; Venice 5; Portugal 5; Russia 100; Turk 5;
1792; Eng 300; Spain 5; France 100; Austria 40; Holland 100; Venice 5; Portugal 5; Russia 100; Turk 5;

There is so much data in the .csv files (information which has allowed me to better understand the game in all it's subtle glory). If there is a general intest in such things I will post more enlighting insights in the future. And of course, I would encourage others to do the same.

I think it is most interesting that Spain has a big boost during from 1615-1665 and then falls off substantially. I also like the way Turkey implodes. And this should explain why the Dutch have a finger in everyone's CoT pot.

I think this is Colonial Dynamism

This looks like the colonial dynamism table. I don't think it has anything to do with traders. Divide the number listed above by 50 to give your colonial dynamism e.g. free bonus colonists per year.

One assumes that divisions yielding partial remainders are accured e.g. a dynamism of 10 = 1/5 colonist per year or 1 colonist per 5 years.

Thanks for looking into this. Have seen the file looks like the colonist.csv but have not messed with either too much.

Please post game mechanics things (like this) in the Scenario forum so it does not get lost in the 'general board' flood of posts.

The amounts of merchants a country get is more dependant on other factors AFAIK. Stability, coastal provicnes (protestant or not), number of monopolies and COTs, ...

If this has a bearing it can't be that much. And merchants are a way less valuable commodity than settlers who really depend for colonial dynamism on colonists.csv and no otehr factors (though u can get settlers in other ways)

And yes, some mod should move this to the scenario forum :D

I think this merchant file works in a similar way to colonial dynamism: as well as the traders you get through owning CoTs, coastal provinces, monopolies... you get freebie ones every so often according to these figures. 100 probably means one a year, as per CD, so presumably, a rating of 5 means every 20 years, one merchant will show up that you weren't expecting.
(I've noticed this as England : even before colonial dynamism proper kicks in, in 1560, you get an odd colonist every now and then for no apparent reason. This is because the value in the csv file isn't 0: it's 10, later going up to 20.

Colonial dynmaism works a bit weirder than that though. For example 200 for Spain is 2 a year in that period. 3 a year in another. A 5 gives Holland 2 a year. A 0 will give Holand also 2 a year and so on :D

But u don't need merchant "dynamism" at all to get by as u can get merchants easily.

True.. .most players wind up owning so many CoTs/monopolies etc. that they have 12 traders a year anyway, so an extra one wouldn't show up.

yes, it is impossible to figure out how to modify this file to get the right results. I have tried to add colonial dynmaism to my scenario but i ended upp with a shipyard in australia:D
