Yes it's possible.

I don't know if anyone else takes interest in running HOI on a small, underpowered PC, but I just did to have a 2nd PC for testpurposes.

Stats: P200, 64 MB RAM, S3Virge graphics card with 1 MB RAM.

No overclocking or other hokus pokus - just regular settings.

The RAM meets the minimum requirements found elsewhere in this subforum. The two other don't. But there's absolutely no fatal problem. Ofc. it will take a lot of time loading and scrolling too. But it's doable.

I'm not that surprised since I did a similar thing with EU (and that was with a P90 and 32 MB RAM).

Who says you can't make supergames without a super PC?

I guess Paradox played safe and set minimumrequirements above the physical minimum to avoid complaints. But here you are, FWIW.

Then again we get complaints from people with P4-3000 and 1gig memory and 256meg video card. So go figure. :)

Very rarely do software producers tell you the real minimum requirements; it's almost always actually a 'recommended minimum' or 'minimum supported'. An actual minimum would vary so they play it safe. Resources can also depend on the OS; I believe WinME and XP require more than 98 and 2000 (some software 'minimums' actually do show this). I've been running HoI on DirectX 7 ('minimum 8.1') and Victoria on DirectX 8.1 ('minimum 9.0' IIRC) quite well to give another example. 1MB of video RAM is a hard minimum for HoI I believe (800x600x16bpp=960000 byte framebuffer). 1.5MB would be minimum for 1024x768 res. My old Thinkpad 600E (P2-300/416MB RAM/2.5MB video) ran HoI at 1024x768 with barely adequate speed.

Ah! but do you play HOI or Vic MP?

Haven't played MP with the older DirectX yet; that could certainly make a difference because of using DirectPlay. I have played LAN MP with HoI and EU2 on the old laptop (with DX 8.1) and it worked OK. Also, I use counters rather than sprites in HoI which may make a difference in CPU use.

8.1 with EU2 and atleast early HOI would be okay, I don't think you would get away with Dx7, you certainly could not play Vic MP with Dx7.

In the interest of truth I must correct one point: I was comparing my setup with the minimum requirements reported elsewhere on this site.

However, yesterday I happened to look at the back side of the box HOI came in and THERE it says min. requirements is a P200 and 64mb. Which is exactly what I got. So perhaps I'm not below min, requirements after all, so perhaps the min. requirements reported in this forum has been increased just to make sure?

Different publisher may make different claims.
And differnt people have different opinions about what meets minimum playability.
