The year is 2050, and Earth is doomed: Climate change is out of control, conflicts abound. There is only one hope: the wealthiest and most powerful nations of Earth take their best and brightest (and wealthiest?) and send them off in sleeper ships, towards a new hope.

But something went horribly wrong - these great sleeper colony ships, while on their way to Alpha Centauri, were intercepted...

...and well on their way to Andromeda. Strewn across our neighbouring galaxy, each to find their own fate in this vast, mysterious galaxy.

150 years after planetfall, the former nations of earth find themselves in a position to claim their place in this world - or perish.

Old foes might be new allies, or vice versa. Who will emerge triumphant?

Now that we have the really cheesy backstory established: It has been known now for a while that we can have our custom races generated in a new game. So why not make a neat mod out of it?

The idea is this: Humanity's most powerful nations (G20 nations and friends) duking it out in a galaxy that is not our own. Many people have stated they'd rather play humans than aliens, and what would be better than playing your own nation?

I am imagining these nations/races to be somewhat resembling sa caricature of the real deal. Picture today's and the future's most powerful nations, each being their own race in Stellaris.
Personally, I am heavily influenced by both SMAC and Freelancer.

Now, I need some ideas for government types and ethoses for each. The goal is to put emphasis on what really defines these countries, be it founded in truth or prejudice. Hyperbole is always great - I am aiming for caricatures here! Imagine what a specific country could be like in 2050 - and applying what was said before. Plus it would be boring to only encounter indirect democracies. So here's my take on the G20 nations and friends (take it with a grain of salt, so please don't be offended ;) ), with my idea of the names, government types and ethos:

I'll aim to have custom namelists for all nations/factions, I hope @Tearsdale can be of assitance here :)

As a resident of this magnificent country, I can't agree with "Materialist" representation of Russian ethics. Though the atheism of USSR is a known thing, if you want to represent modern Russia, then long-bearded priests blessing the rockets with a broom moistened with holy water are of utmost importance.

LOL :D
I see your point. Though i think you cannot be collectivist without being materialist, but I may remember wrongly.

Would you have a neat name for Space Rossija? I am struggling to come up with names that are different to "Russian Solar Federation"... :(

I actually still don't know how the game treats empire names with more than two words. Have we had any precedent as of yet?

LOL :D

I'm pretty sure there is no materialism in Russia today, the same is about collectivism. Those things were belong to USSR, and they faded away after 1991.
Russia should be militarist, spiritualist and individualist (but not fanatic).

Looks likethe ancient Egyptians were collectivist (thats why they COULD build pyramids) without being materialist (thats why they DID build pyramids).

LOL :D

After Vernadsky we can name it as "All-Russian cosmosphere".

I do really like the idea of this mod and wish you all the best with it.

If you are basing the nations of Stereotypes then Ireland should probably be Spiritualist instead of Materialist. Also with the UK i feel like they should have some kind of Autocracy, don't know which one would work best, but we are Stereotyped as Fanatic Monarchists (or at least thats what i think :p). I did think of suggesting a Divine Mandate because we are the only real western state that has no separation of Church and State but that would mean swapping out Materialists with Spiritualists which may not fit that well with the UK.

Thank you :)
As for Ireland:

Name: Interstellar Irish Diaspora
Government: Moral Democracy
Ethos:
Pacifist (pretty devoutly neutral the Irish military only ever been engaged in UN peacekeeping missions)
Xenophile (We're a famously welcoming people to any and all)
Materialist (We're a European hub for international tech companies as well as nanotechnology and advanced materials research)
Traits:
Charismatic (It's the gift of the gab ;))
Nomadic (A diaspora of over 80million from a country with a current population of 4.5million is pretty phenomenal)
Rapid Breeders (As I pointed out to @Machvvär Ireland has the highest rate of population growth in Europe)
Nonadaptive (Ireland has a very mild climate, Fierce mild as we'd describe it, the country grinds to a halt when there's more than an inch of snow, something that happens once every 5-10years, and it's a well known fact that the melting point of an Irish person is 30°C - how vast numbers can survive in Australia is beyond the comprehension of modern science)

As for the Space UK: That might actually work. I'll certainly consider it. I do tend to "dismember" larger/important states on religious/social grounds, as I did for the US and Germany (and well the Koreas), might as well have Holy Anglia vs. British Star Empire in it as well!

For India, it's been the cradle of several faiths and observance remains high, so I suppose they'd be a form of indirect democracy with spiritualist ethics. Maybe they have pacifism (with their rivals being Pakistan), but I'm not sure if that works out overall.

Saudi Arabia is likely a plain old Empire; it's got a monarchy, it's ruling family is powerful, etc. It just happens to have a strong spiritualist bent.

As said before, Russia's... definitely no longer materialist in government. The state is effectively supporting the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Church is currently supporting the State.

I'm not exactly sure what counts for the Friends list, but:

Philippines (): Rapid Breeders (without a doubt), Nomadic (our economy runs on the massive amount of remittance that's sent back)
- Plutocratic Oligarchy (there are old established families, new wealthy families, and they tend to run most of the things)
- Fanatic Spiritualist (we're very Catholic, 80%+ of population. During the Easter parades, the bishops have to tell believers not to nail themselves to wooden crosses as a sign of devotion)
- Xenophile (when going overseas for work, they usually adapt pretty quickly to cultural norms. Also, melting pot culture of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Spanish, and American influences)

Good inoit, thank you! A good, natural rival to the Irish diaspora :)

Would Ou have a neat name handy @Paulus Leto? Philippines is a mouthful, something akin to england = anglia?

Poland must into space.

I think we can mod nations using normally incompatible ethoses and government. We won't have the limitations of the game designer (or we can edit the gov restrictions, in the worse case). The only thing which may be problematic is that such nations could end with stranges AI, like a Enlightened Monarchy with Militarist ethos, going in crusade against the galaxy. So it's not impossible than new AI and adaptation of the existing ones would be necessary.

Will you regroup all nations in one mod, or doing one per nation with maybe a modpack regrouping all of them ?

That's a fine choice, I can only approve. ^^

If you only add new predefined nations, at least in a first time, we will be able to decide for each one if we want them in our games anyway. I should have though before asking, but I often don't. My excuses for the bother.

Yeah i have to see first whether we can include the names in the premade empires or not.

I might have a 'light' version with no custom names (shouldn't change checksum) and a 'full' version (should change it).

But really, I will just habe to see how this worls first.

Names lists, you mean ? I find it a bit sad that such a minor thing break checksum, but since I don't play ironman and rarely multiplayer, I'm fine.
That's a good idea to provide the two options, so .. raised thumbs !

On a side topic, I just found this video which confirmed my suspicions. By editing the files, we circumvent the normal limitations and can go crazy for our nations.

Look what happening now in Russia and reconsider. Last sunday we got around 5000 peple on streets with priest (And not in Moscow). IT IS possible to go into jail if you post smth like "There is no god" in our version of Facebook. So no. Fanatic materialists is not about Russia. Looking around in my country i would say collectivists, spiritualists, militarists.

Mhh, autocratic orthodox space empire. Could work. Thank you for your input, I will reconsider :)

@MP: It really shouldnt be a problem if everybody else has the mod. Bit i think i will just do a light and full version in single packs. Downloading each mation would be too much of a hassle.

I guess we will all be smarter on monday.
