Whenever I advance past a certain date, my game retreats into a small window in the top left corner of my screen. When this happens I am unable to click on anything and am thus forced to end the task through Task Manager. Anyone know of a fix for this/what causes it? Would be greatly appreciated.

This looks like the game is crashing and fails to properly show the crash reporter. Does it create a new folder for the crash in "Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/crashes"? The exception.txt from that folder might give some clue to what is happening(especially if you don't play on windows)
Does this only happen on one save or does it happen on the same date on different campaigns?
If you don't use any game changing mods, you could attach your save here, I can try it out and probably tell you more.

It does create the folder yeah. Not until I forcefully close it though. It happens on all saves, never on the same date though. Always a few decades in, sometimes less, sometimes more. I'll attach the "exception.txt" but idk how useful it'll be

It's not so useful, but it shows that the crash happens in eu4.exe, so it is probably not caused by something external(sometimes crashes happen in directx or in a graphics driver) and that it happens, because something gets divided by 0. I don't remember seeing a divide by 0 in an eu4 crash before.

Is the game modded? If it is, does it also happen in campaigns which you play without any mods?

I was using a mod that removed maintenance costs by setting certain values to 0. Maybe this caused it?

This could be the case. If the mod doesn't change anything else, you could try if you can get past the crash by disabling it(if you play on ironman, try it on a copy of your save so that your main save doesn't get broken if disabling the mod breaks something).

Yeah it seems like it is what was causing the issue. I've experimented with my own mod by making the values something like 0.001 rather than 0 and that seems to help. The other mod alters governing capacity too though so I'm curious as to whether that may have had an effect

I think you should report this to the mod author so that they can change the mod to prevent crashes.
And it could be considered a bug in the game that it crashes if the values are 0. But I don't know if the developers would be interested in fixing this, because it doesn't happen in the normal game. I think the best chance for a fix would be a bugreport with a very minimal mod which changes only one value and adding steps-to-reproduce which reliably cause a crash from the 1444 start date.
