ctd at startup: 1.05c

Errm, I'm seeing the same problems as this chap. Game runs fine on my *BRAND NEW* 2.4 P4 with w98 and directx 9.0b (is this the culprit perhaps?) when I run the 1.0 version off the CD. Upgrade to 1.05c: blammo, darn thing won't even start.

Yes I know how to install the zipfile, did it last week on my old box. Yes I have made the screen resolution and avi_back changes. No dice.

If there are any more pearls of wisdom, let's hear em. I bought the new gadget specifically to run Hoi, since 1.05c seems to have flattened the old one.

For the record the graphics are integrated SiS thingys found on Gigabyte mobos, and I've applied the only update I found about three minutes ago--same result.

So, over to you guys :)

OK, just for interest I deinstalled everything (AGAIN, groan) and reloaded 1.0 and then 1.05 NA. This works just fine, with no changes to avi etc. So the question is: what's broken in 1.05c??

How far does it get in loading? Do you even get to the main menu? How much memory do you have? Doesn't really sound like the same problem as the original poster; he's having a problem while the game is running.

Not the same problem at all!

Please start new threads for new problems!

system config: 2.4 P4, 512 memory, W98 with latest updates from microsatan. On board Sis 651 graphics, with latest update from gigabyte and the newest driver from MS. For triangulation, Shogun, which is very picky about video, runs great on it.

I don't see the HOI main menu at all. It crashes out straight away. I've reloaded Hoi three times and in every case, releases other than 1.05c (1.0 and 1.05) work as I would expect, very nicely thank you on this box. I have not made and am not using any mods. 1.05c runs ok but very slowly on my old machine, a 933 P3 with 128 MB, which has nvidia tnt2 graphics. So I do know how to get it working.

More info cheerfully supplied if needed.

Things to try.
1) Make sure the AVI folder is still renamed after your reinstall that you mentioned.
2) Adjust your color depth to 16BIT
3) Change the font size to normal.

Maybe try setting your screen res to 800x600 before running the game (that's the res the main menu runs at even if the game runs at 1024x768 or 1280x1024). Since you have 512MB with Win98, have you done any tweaks for it? See here for some discussion of Win98 with 512MB+.

EDIT: The bottom line of the discussion is that you may want to set MaxFileCache=360000 in the [vcache] section of system.ini (around 70% of 512MB).

Your location says you live in Australia, but you said you downloaded the NA patch. Who is your publisher? There is an Asia patch available, too. Who is your publisher? If it's Typhoon Games, then try downloading the Asia patch.

NA patch will not install on non SF version games. ;)

OT is Australia in Asia...

There is a lively debate here on this very subject. Despite the evidence of the map, our elected representatives seem to think not...or, in HOI terms:

"Australia is a puppet of USA, grants military access, allows military control and sends expeditionary forces."

you figure it out :)

OK, the system.ini hack works. Did not have to make the other changes. Thanks to all concerned...now to deal with those pesky Russians.

Great, something else to add to my knowledge base!
