Summary
Game crashes entire PC after ~15 minutes of play - PSU required for resetDescription
The problem only occurs with CK3. Since first encountering this issue I have played other CPU and GPU intensive games for hours or even day-long marathons with no problems, but CK3 specifically cannot go for longer than 15 minutes.Specs-
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-core
GPU: RTX 4070
RAM: 32 GB
PSU: 750 watts
Problem-
The crash is always sudden, and starts with my monitor and wireless keyboard switching off and displaying "no signal". When this happens, the red LED light on the motherboard for the CPU lights up. The PC will remain stuck in this state indefinitely until I shut down the PC. Using the standard power button on the PC does not shut down the machine. I have to manually flip the I/O switch on my PSU to hard-restart the PC. After turning power back on, the PC boots like normal and shows no errors, but the process is infinitely repeatable.
I have checked and confirmed that the Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings III\crashes folder is empty. Screen recording the problem also does not work. The best I have managed was to download the free version of HWMonitor and run it in the background while playing (and crashing) CK3. During the next power up I checked HWMonitor again and found none of the temps to be outside of what should be acceptable for this hardware.
Solutions I've already tried:
- I have already updated my motherboard BIOs to the latest non-beta version available.
- I have already confirmed all my drivers are running the most up-to-date versions.
- I am not using multiple screens.
- I tried limiting the number of cores on my CPU that can be used by the game.
- I tried switching to Vulcan
- I attempted a clean install, with all previous save games removed and with a fresh save file
- yes, I removed all mods
- I have verified game files multiple times, before and after the reinstall
- I have tried editing the registry according to the solution posted by another user
- I have fully uninstalled all third-party anti virus software
Steps to reproduce
1. Load the game to the main menu2. start game, play as normal until monitor turns off (~15 minute wait)
If the moment that the monitor shuts off happens to coincide with a click into a specific menu:
3. restart the PC
4. load the save file where the click triggered the crash
5. click into the exact same menu that caused the previous crash
6. the computer will immediately crash again (fastest way to replicate the issue)
Alternately:
- wait on the main menu for ~15 minutes. The game will eventually crash from here as well.
