Game crashes on launch (steam)

Since yesterday CK3 has started crashing immediately during the first "initializing game" loading screen when I launching the game. Until then it was working fine.

I have already tried completely reinstalling the game, verifying game files, running the game as administrator and adding it as an exception to Ransomware. None of it made any difference.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
I have attempted to start the game and have gotten to the screen where it says game initialising. The music plays and then its just crashes just as it is about to go to the main menu

Please explain how to reproduce the issue


Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?

MS store or Steam edition?

MS store, try this trick:

Unable to launch the game on Xbox Game Pass

For some reason, CK III stopped launching on Xbox Game Pass. Even this morning, it was still working. Now I click on "Play" on the Paradox Launcher, it loads a little, then turns off. Does anyone have a similar problem?

Steam edition:
DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log

I'm using the steam version, here are the file. I can't attach error.log since it's empty (the forum won't let me upload the file).

Nothing else of concern in there, in fact the Windows diagnostics at the end are weirdly empty.

Aside from adding the game ro Ransomware did you also add Steam and the launcher?

What happens if you exit the Steam app entirely and run ck3.exe by itself?

Installing the driver and adding steam + launcher to the list of exceptions didn't work, but completely shutting down steam did.

As long as steam isn't running the game launches without issues, but as soon as I turn on steam it refuses to start. Strange.

Regardless, I am happy as long as I can play the game. Thank you very much for your help!



(Btw, the windows diagnostics being empty might be because in the process of trying to fix this issue I did a fresh reinstall of Windows)

I was having this problem since a few days ago and this was the only advice that helped me so far. Thanks dude, too bad I can't get the steam achievments but better than nothing!

Yeah, I really hope PDS manages to solve this issue soon, I've had to put my ironman game on hold for that reason. But at least I can play the game now so that's infinitely better than before.
