Game crashes on old versions when hitting "Play" after selecting a nation

I wanted to go back and play both 1.28 and 1.30 but every single time I hit "Play" the game crashes. No error messages, just a plain crash. This only happens on old versions (I've tried every version of 1.30 on the betas tab, and the most recent 1.28 version as well.)
I have verified the files on steam, deleted both the contents of the documents eu4 folder (- save games) and the steam eu4 folder and yet it still occurs.

When you go back game versions, you should delete the whole Documents/Paradox Interactive/Eu4/ folder (after moving any valued saves elsewhere first of course), so the older version can write it the way it wants to.
