game crashes to desktop

just installed eu2 v1.8 from gamersgate. installed fine, goes to main menu fine, but when i try to actually launch a game as a country it crashes to desktop, giving me the standard 'stopped working' error message. when i look at the message it says the problem lies with the .exe file. i have reinstalled to a different place and still the problem occurs. im running on xp and have got it to work on a different computer before. can anyone help?

Hard to see what the problem can be, really. try renaming the AVI directory to AVI-old, and updating your video drivers.

thanks for your help. i was jsut coming on to say iv fixed it - my computer's resolution was too good and i had to turn it down. now why microsoft cant tell me this i dont know. maybe if they put less effort into making bad playstation copies and overly snazzy operating systems theyd do something useful.
