hello
I have a problem, due to which I still haven´t been able to play this interesting game (aaaargh!).
I have installed the game. When clicking on the game symbol and past the Paradox video, the Stalin/Churchill screen appears. As soon as I get the "audio initializing" message, the game crashes to the desktop. I have checked the save debug and it is during the audio process the crash occurs. I have patch 1.1 installed, the game version is german. I also tried renaming the avi and audio folders, switching colour depth to 16, updating my audio and video drivers and shutting everything else down, it all doesn´t help.
Here are is my technical data

OS: WinXP home with SP 2

Computer, CPU & speed: Sony Vaio, Intel Pentium 1.6 GHz

RAM: 512 MB

Free HDD space: about 4 Giga on the game partition

Video (brand, model, driver, memory): NVidia GeForce Go 6200, 128 MB. Driver: 7.0.7.5., dated of 5.11.2004

Sound (brand, model, driver): Realtek High Definition Audio, driver is 5.10.0.5035, dated of 3.11.2004.

DirectX Version:9.0c

I will follow this up with a DirectX diagnostics, so you have all information you need

I really hope you can help and I can play this game soon !
Thanks,
Pablito

Where did you buy the game?, who is the publisher? Their logo will be on the CD.

Your video driver looks out of date, your video setting do not reflect that you set the color depth to 16 bit. Try setting the desktop to 1024x768 as well.

Leave the AVI folder renamed, and make sure you have shut down everything in the background.

the game was bought in Germany (Saturn). The logo on top of the CD (above the words Heart of Iron) reads Paradox Interactive, white letters on a black background plus a graphic of a dinosaur skeleton or something.
You are right about the colour depth, I reverted to 32 after trying running the game at 16 to no effect. The same goes for the screen res. When I performed the Directx diagnostics I had already changed them back to standard, as my screen looks really blurry at 16/1028x768. I also updated the driver for the video card, still doesn´t work. Frustration is setting in, as I don´t think I will be able to run the game. Do you have any other suggestions that might help ?

Please manually uninstall, following the instructions in the sticky thread. then a fresh install from CD try it with no patch to see if it works, then apply the patch and see if it works.

No, still the same problem. I uninstalled as described, did a clean install and tried without and then with the patch, using all possible combinations of colour depth and screen res, nothing. It still crashes at exactly the same point (initializing audio). I then thought the cd might be faulty, so we tried to run the game at a friend of mine´s and it worked right away.

Try reducing the acceleration of the sound card one notch at a time. Also remember to rename the AVI folder.

YES ! It finally worked. I had to turn the acceleration off completely, worked fine after that. Then set the colour depth back to 32 bit and still no problems.
Thanks a lot for your swift support and your patience. Now it´s time for war ! :)
Oh yes, one final question, as I really am no computer expert: will switching the acceleration off affect any other programs or the sound quality when playing music ? In other words, should I toggle it off only for the game or leave it this way ?

You can experiment and you will probably not notice a difference, but if you do then toggle it.
Glad you are up and running.
