Try the AVI folder rename trick first.
Also set your color depth to 16BIT and turn off any programs running in the background, like virus protection, ICQ/E-mail ...

A suggestion: uninstall the game, delete its directory, reinstall the game, then apply the last patch and beta patch. I run under Windows XP without any problems. Didn't even need to rename the AVI folder or something.

Reinstalling might help! :)
Different people have radically different computer configurations, I assure that some do need to rename the AVI folder to get it to work at all. Let's have him atleast try these easy things before asking him to do a complete reinstall. ;)

Can you install the game?, what happens when you try and run it.
Do you have Administrator rights on the WinXP account you are using?

Okay Run a Direct X Diagnostic for me and post the results here.
Start menu - Run - Then type DXdiag.
Run the tests for each of the tabs along the top. then select save results to file the button on the bottom right. Post the contents of that file here.

Okay, You should update your video driver.
Also am I reading it right that you have some kind of joystick?
If so try uninstalling the joystick, I recall some people having a problem which joysticks for some reason.

Don't know one way or the other to recommend that particular one, how about the one before that one.?
Also try setting your refresh rate at 60hrz.
Also play around with the video and audio acceleration, try different settings.
