After colonizing most of S. America, I decided to expand into the parts of N. America not yet colonized. After initially establishing trading posts in all of explored mid-US (the West having been already colonized by English and Dutch), I have decided to upgrade them to colonies in all favourable locations. Imagine my suprise when the game did not let me do that for some provinces! Whenever I right- clicked on my army unit, only the "Send a merchant" option was colored/avalable for some provinces. Thus, I was able to colonize Talahasse and Detroit, but not the states in between these 2 provinces, such as Alabama. As a result, I had to settle with the retaining of the already established trading posts there.

How is this whole thing possible? Does anyone know what went wrong? Maybe once you establish a trading post in certain provinces, you cannot upgrade to a colony or something - that is the only explanation I can think of.
