Multisampling

When I turned off multisampling it said I needed to restart (the computer?)before the changes would take place so I closed Rome and when I tried to open it without restarting the computer I got an error and it wouldn't even open to the start window.

I reinstalled and thought it would work fine like before but froze again after a few years. I'll try a whole restart after turning off multisampling. I doubt I'll be able to continue my save.
 
Please post your settings.txt and system.log files. Also run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here up to the Sound Devices section.

I haven't seen that laptop chipset used here before. But do try updating your video driver http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp

As it only happens after playing for a while, we should look at your system and video temperatures. If your laptop doesn't provide a way of looking at that, Google for SPEEDFAN and install that; if you see temps over about 50C that's definitely a problem. Check your fans are all working and the vents aren't blocked by dust, or stuff on your desk.
 
My computer's a PC I bought in Prague three plus years ago, bringing my HD and copy of windows with me from the states. (The HD had EUII on it at the time.) That might explain the wierd chip set-up. As for the fix:

Well the driver updates didn't do it, it froze in the first year again. It seems like it's a memory thing because it doesn't freeze for the first 90 years (kelts) and 40 years (macedonia - more going on) and then after restart and load save it freezes before the next year even when I've turned the computer on cold. I believe I have plenty of memory (although with all these MS and driver updates I don't know for how much longer) and I even vaccumed the inside of my pc housing in the meantime, cleaning it out good.

This is the first game that's ever done that on my system including heavy graphics games like the total wars on up to medieval II but their strategy sucks so I prefer the EU types. Has paradox gone the way of microsoft and putting stuff out before it works?

If it's the temperature, well it doesn't affect anything else, and if that's the case I'd say it's the game. If there's nothing else I can do, I'll just take the game back for a refund and wait until the gold package comes out in another year or so with the empire expansion or whatever they have planned to make it a two-part sale like every strategy game since AOE. (I was suprised to see the recent prequel to EUIII.) Hopefully they'll have something like all the others that seem to work for most people...and me until Rome got so fancy.

Thanks again for the help and if there's anything else I can do before I take it back to the retailer for my 40 euros I'll give it a try. Otherwise I can spend that money on beer watching the EM for the next three weeks.

Paradox games push the video processor harder than almost any other game, certainly more than MW2. I urge you to install the SPEEDFAN utilty, it's free.

Well I opened the start screen to access this page but instinctively I his the play after I had packed the game up to take to the store. I played for twelve years with no freeze and don't know if there's a rational explanation for it. Perhaps it was a favorable sacrifice to the gods or just having speedfan installed. I'll see if it keeps up.
