Hi,

I've just installed the game (1.2.51f) on my new PC:

AMD Ryzen 9800X3D
RTX 5080
32GB 6000mHz CL30 RAM

Windows 11 Pro 24H2

The game keeps crashing after a few minutes of playing on my save. No mods were installed except the official Northeast USA pack. CPU/RAM usage does not exceed 40%. RAM usage around 11GB total including at crash.

It's possible this is down to your Windows version ( ). 24H2 is unfortunately a bit of a mess when it comes to gaming and it's not just Cities that's affected. This thread is has a potential fix that requires you to change the registry (please only do that if you know what you're doing!) but you should also check if there's a new Windows update you can download.
Registry change did not fix the issue :(. The game is basically unplayable now.

I get an occasional crash playing with a few minor mods for the UI. I tried straight vanilla and had the same issue. Sometimes it will happen within 10-20 minutes of playing. Other times I can go several hours without a crash. Doesn't seem to be any particular reason for them.

Has this happened before or only since Anniversary Patch?

If you guys are sure this same problem is affecting Cities: Skylines II, you should emulate the CK3 team and post a sticky here in the forums.

With that in mind, question for @Cities: Skylines Official : is Colossal Order also working directly with Microsoft in order to address this issue? Great move from the CK3 team!

And one more suggestion! If you go here, Microsoft has quite a lot of documentation on known issues with 24H2, as well as ongoing and future fixes:

You'll see the section where they list video games that are affected by 24H2 -- it's really handy!

Colossal Order should notify Microsoft that their game isn't working for some players due to Windows 11 24H2. That way, Microsoft can add Cities: Skylines II to their official documentation page. Since other games are currently listed there, the absence of Cities: Skylines II might make it appear to some like 24H2 is just a convenient boogeyman.

Both. But it happens less often after the Anniversary Patch. That was a great patch from my perspective. I rarely played the game. But after that patch, I think the game is playable and enjoyable. The rare crash doesn't bother me enough to be a deal-breaker. It's annoying when it happens but I have autosave on and just reload the last one saved. I may be out 3-4 minutes of game play but I can live with that.

If you happen to have restore points enabled in Windows Settings, you can try booting into Windows Safe Mode with administrative privileges and selecting a restore point, if one exists, before the 24H2 update. In your case, I would simply wait, as Windows will likely release a hotfix that can resolve this issue.

I appear to be experiencing the same issue. I'm also running 24H2. The game will run for a few minutes then just CTD. It didn't do this initially when I loaded 1.2.5f1 so maybe it's a corrupted mod? The behavior started today for me.

Skyve isn't showing any mods that are outdated and my compatibility report isn't showing any issues.

I'm running the game with 24H2 (9950X3D + 4070Super), no crashs so far. I had tons of crashing even with Windows itself because of XMP, when I disabled it everything went back to normal.

Someone on another thread said that his problem may be with the Road Builder mod. OP said they're experiencing it without mods; is anyone experiencing the crashing who has Road Builder installed?

I tried to run the Skyve troubelshooter but got "Inconclusive" as the result.

I am using mods, as it were, but only those put out by the Cities: Skylines II official account on the Paradox modfront. Anyone feel free to enlighten me if any of those're known to cause crashes (I do know about the bugs in the UK and Japan packs).

Otherwise, I can't figure out what the deal is. Though the crashes are much less frequent than before this last patch. I even tried the registry fix suggested above.

Speaking of, @TinyWiking , do you happen to know whether the other official suggestion stickied in the CK3 and Vic3 forums apply here? That is, is it possible to run Vulkan with Cities:Skylines II and if so should I give it a try?

Hello, unfortunately I have to join the group of people with the problem of the game freezing on startup. The trouble occurred after installing exactly this update [2025-03 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5053656)]. I tried to fix the problem through the steps given above, but nothing helps. Does anyone have a similar problem on Windows 10? I'm honestly going to spend a lovely Sunday today to install it instead of 11, this is the 3rd time this year I've had a problem with windows 11, shame to say more....

I run Win 11 24H2 and don't have these issues. I recently upgraded from 23H2 but have gone 8+ hours straight without a crash/freeze/etc.

I used to have regular random crashes in CS2 and Warhammer 3 but no other games. After hours of reading posts online I ended up digging into my BIOS. The settings were set to be Intel's recommended (13900K) settings. Even so, I changed the XMP profile along with the CPU power settings. That fixed all my crashes that weren't related to mods and dropped my temps by 15C (it's nice not having a space heater in my room). After clearing out problem mods (even those Skyve flagged as ok) everything runs perfect now.

All that to say, it's easy to blame the game. But it may be other things causing people problems. It makes no sense to have a lot of people who have issues but so many others don't. People assume mods are safe to use but that's not really the case. Disabling mods doesn't always work either. They may need to be deleted from the playset being used in CS2. I created a separate playset that only contained CO released packs. Then added one or two mods at a time until the game became unstable. That helped me to identify the bad mods. Skyve said they were good. Other people use them without issues. But for me, the game became unstable so I can't use them.

Find out what works for your PC and stick with it. But don't assume what works for someone else will work for you.
