game kicks out to desktop

ive had HOI for a couple weeks and have played it just fine
i run the game at the higher resolution with no issues
i used all the updates and again had no problems

a couple days ago my system became infected and i ended up reformating the drive and reinstalling everything

now i cant run HOI at any resolution other than 800 X 600 and it baffles me, i have installed the 1.02 patch, i have uninstalled and reinstalled both several times, ive tried it without the patch

the game will load, when i select a country and hit start the music will stop (same with music disabled) then the screen will go black and then im kicked back to windows

im am running a dell inspiron notebook, p4m 1.7ghz, 512mb ddr, 40gb 5400rpm, win xp home, 64mb ddr gforce mx 440 go w/ newest driver, 15" uxga screen (800 x 600 is just too big)

i dont have any more ideas ,

someone please help

i found a thread that i must have missed earlier and the advice given there has worked

all i ended up doing was changing the name on the avi folder to avi_old, now the higher resolutions work find

i still find this very odd as it worked perfectly well before and everything is the same but who am i to argue

anyhow thanks to everyone who has posted help

Try DLing the latest video drivers and get all the updates for your operating system. You may have had better drivers before you reinstalled.
