Environment:
Ubuntu 14.10 on http://www.ezlink.ca/~jwinterton/Hardware2.html Very large hardware description. Summary: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor × 2 with 4 GB. Swap partition 20 GB. 64-bit O/S decor.

Driver for GPU is Gallium 0.4. AMD refuses to support the RS780 chipset on this version of the Linux Kernel.

Very disappointing, and I really hope that this wasn't a waste of fifty bucks. o

Time to retire your computer and get a new one, it is 7 years old, and it was a low-quality when you got it as well.

You'll never run the game on this hardware.

I had the same problem on my Debian machine. It turned out the problem was that Steam client was not up to date. After forcing an update (via File menu in Steam) the game now starts fine for me.

Thanks for the encouragement, fellows. I doubt I'll be springing for a new machine from my burial fund. This is probably my last machine, and I can't think of any reason to upgrade just to play a game. I'll just consider my $50+ a dead loss with no insurance. I may pursue a software solutiion, but believe me, new toys at age 77 is not an answer for me.
