If your monitor only supports 800x600, then it is a VERY old monitor, If you are sure that is the case, then maybe upgrading is a good idea, you can pick up a non flatpanel monitor VERY cheap now. I don't know what your budget may be but there is probably an option availaible to you.

Look around the modification forum, you might find a mod that lets you run the game in a window, still don't know if that would work for you.
And if your monitor is so old your system may not even be able to run the game.
