I have been hearing good things about the depth of this game so I went out and bought it. I applied the latest patch and ran it but I was stopped by the unbelievable slow scroll rate. Also the game seems very laggy.

Any idea what the problem might be?

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

And, if you don't mind a different default look of the map, goto the 'map' subfolder in your main installation directory, and rename the tiles.bmp file to something else.

That will deactivate the tiles overlay bitmap images. It removes the fancy looking terrain map, replacing it with the old style EU2/HoI province terrain coloring, but it will significantly speed up the graphics of Vicky, especially on older video boards.

Jan Peter

Let's try some simple things first before we pull out the big gun. :)

Castellon; I did all these things with no effect. I remembered them from your support on the EU2 forum.

I will try what jpd told me to do but is there any other alternative because I do not want to sacarfice good visuals unless it is the last thing left.

Thanks,

I mentioned them because your specs say you are running 32 BIT not 16.
YOu could also try updating your Video driver.
Also look very closely at the processes you are running and shut down all you do not need.

What is really odd for my game is a stop between every day. It gets so annoying, and I dont know what to do. I am not running anything, and it has only happened since I got 1.03b, perhaps this is the problem?

Same problem!
The game seems to "freeze" for 1 sec when the day change, but the scroll is fluently when I pause...
This happened also before the 1.03b.
I've tryed everything the threads about this problem says... but still nothing.

Playing Victoria in this way is not funny :( and make this great game completly unplayable :(

What do you have the auto save set at?
Have you renamed the tiles.bmp file?

Well pausing is still letting the CPU finish it's job, it is processing the days event, trades, ...

You did not mention what your system specs were?

I played Victoria on 2 different PCs, and I had the same problem in both.

The first one was:
PIV 2 Ghz
256 Mb SDRAM
NVidia FX5600 256 Mb
Win XP H.E.
Last drivers, last directx

The second (my actual pc):
PIV 2 Ghz
1024 Mb DDR
NVidia FX5800 128 Mb
Win XP Professional
Last drivers, last directx

Well the first one has too little ram to run XP well.

I am supprised you have problems with the seconf though.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic on the second machine:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Here there is my dxdiag:

Here there is my dxdiag:

AGP Status: Not Available

There is your problem. Your graphics subsystem is running in PCI mode, making it it extremely slow.

Make sure you use the video correct drivers, have AGP enabled in your BIOS, and make sure your AGP/GART driver is properly installed.

Jan Peter

I checked the BIOS, and nothing seems strange to me...
AGP is correctly enabled @ 8x, FastWrite ON, but still DxDiag won't let me enable AGP Texture Acceleration :(

EDIT: I installed latest AGP (GART) drivers and now AGP Acceleration is avaible, but Victoria has still the problem I told before :(

Although FPS can be graphics intensive Paradox games also tax video cards albeit in a different way.

Start-Run- then type msconfig, then look at the start up tab, what items are listed there?

Indeed. FPS games tax the internal pologon and texel fill rates of your card, and thus benefit from faster GPU's with more pipelines.

Paradox games are 2D for the most part, and are made up of many overlapping bitmaps. The GPU's internal polygon and texel fill rates are useless here. Instead, the data transfer speed of the AGP subsystem is the limiting factor here.
