Hey Viper, remember me?

Here's the scoop. A month and a half ago I had a problem with the game constantly crashing to the desktop. After your help, I got it fixed and played solid for a month. 2 weeks ago, I had the brilliant idea to upgrade my hard drive from 10G to 80. After reinstalling the game, I tried running it but it won't even load, the hourglass comes on for about 1 sec and stop. After searching on this support thread, I found that some people had the same problem, related to their CD drives and the copy protection software. As for me, the only change in my system was the HD. System specs:

Europa Universalis II V1.05
Windows 98
Athlon 750
Memory 256
Around 26G free hard disk space
Hercules Geforce II MX dual display
Sound Blaster Live!
TEAC 524E
LINKSYS LNE100TX Ethernet card
And yes, I did read the support thread...

One last note. In terms of proof of ownership, I might be screwed as I threw away the receipt and box about 1 month ago along with all my other collected game boxes... you might have to just show up at my apartment to see my disc and manual!

I had a similar problem initially. Trying to launch the game did nothing... apparantly. The hourglass showed up, the CD ran briefly, then nothing. If I tried to shut down or restart my system, it would hang. If I tried launching explorer, it wouldn't work right (hence the reboots). Tech support from Strategy First was that it might be the "copy protection" problem.

HOWEVER: When I finally left it sitting there for ten or fifteen minutes without rebooting, the game loaded. Since then, it works fine. Without the unprotected EXE. My guess is that there is some system-checking routine in there that takes a loooooong time to run on some systems (perhaps those with large drives OR large amounts of free space on their drives?), but creates a record when it finishes. After the first interminable load, it just checks the file and loads up.

You're probably not having this problem any more, but someone is. Perhaps this will be helpful.

In case anyone is checking these messages for bug info, I'm running WIN 2000 on an Athlon 1800+, with 30GB free drive space and 512MB DDR. Even if they aren't checking, having just upgraded from a 233, I had to work it in :).

sorry, I never saw this message

you'll need to e-mail Strategy First directly, check the "Support Options thread" for their e-mail.

I'm deeply sorry :( but they'll be faster than me and they won't take as long :) (link them this thread).
