game won't play, patches won't install

been playing, and enjoying very much, victoria so decided i would give crusader kings , which i bought a few moths ago, a try.
after installing the game (version 1.01.000) thought it would be best to download and install the latest patch before playing. however on trying to install the 1.05 patch i get the following message :
"An option you selected requires that files be installed to your system, or files be uninstalled from your system, or both. A read only file C:\Archivos de programa\Paradox Entertainment\Crusader Kings\db\advances.txt was found while performing the needed file operation on your system. To perform the file operation click the Yes button; otherwise, click No."
clicking either the "yes" or "no" button has absolutely no effect so you end up having to click on "cancel".
a similar thing occurs when i try the automatic uninstall exept in this case the message mentions the following file :
"C:\Archivos de programa\Paradox Entertainment\Crusader Kings\stx\wave\Uni_ArmyyRecruiter.war"
Next i tried installing the game with no patches on a friend's computer. installs ok but impossible to play as wherever (and i mean wherever) any text is it just says "unknown string wanted". clicking on some buttons changes it to "known string wanted" but that's as far as it gets. have run out of space so will forward technical details of pc in another message. your help would be most appreciated. thanks.

sorry if any info missing. i'm not the most able person when it comes to the pc.

Game Version & Patch (incl. publisher): 1.01.000 (tried patch 1.04 and 1.05 with same results)

OS & build/SP:micro intel celeron 330 2,6 ghz s-478

Computer, CPU & speed:intel pentium 4 processor up to 3.06 ghz

RAM: 512mb ddr 400

Free HDD space:63'8 gb

Video (brand, model, driver, memory): bi directional 16-bit data bus

Sound (brand, model, driver):realtek ac'97 audio

DirectX Version:the most up to date version
please make any advice as simple as possible i.e. as if it was for a 5 year old! thanks. (to show how useless i am on a computer i've just discovered the page doesn't come to an end and i can continue writing!!)

i live in spain so everything on the computer is in spanish. don't think it has anything to do with the problem though,

are you sure? i've had absolutely no problems with installing the cds and patches for "victoria" or "eu2". if you're right, could you explain,in really simple language (as my pc skills are very limited), how to do that? thanks.

changed the regional and language control settings to english and solved the "unknown string wanted" problem. also successfully installed the 1.05 patch. this time i noticed that when i was asked to perform the file operation clicking "yes" did have effect. whether this was due to the change in regional and language settings or it was happening before and i just didn't notice it because the file names are very similar i don't kown. in any case many thanks to everybody for your help. now all i have to do is figure out how to play the game!!
