Game won't start up "Couldn't find palette gfx\palette..."

Hi guys,

So I bought and downloaded Hearts of Iron 2 (no expansions) from GamersGate and installed it.

When it opens up I recieve the error messages:

Couldn't find palette gfx\palette\t-carrier_escort C-min L-1.bmp
Couldn't find palette gfx\Palette\T- nuclear_Submarine C-Min L-1.bmp
Couldn't open db\units\division\nuclear_submarine.txt

Couldn't find any resources in the internet to help me with this.

I have downloaded and updated my installation with the 1.3a patch but that did nothing.

I'm running it on XP. I've now uninstalled the game fully, using the sticky and I'm ready to reinstall it with any advice you can give me. And just to clarify I only bought Hearts of War 2, no expansions at all.

Ok,

Just reinstalled the game and patched it up.

Now I just checked the filepath it claims are missing,

lo and behold none of these files exist in the HoW2 directory.

I just made copies of some random files and changed the filename to match the missing files.

It didn't like this but I managed to get on to the main screen.

When I tried to run the tutorial it then stated another file was missing, spy_list.txt if my memory serves.

So just seems I'm missing a load of game files. Still redownloading from GamersGate.

Sounds like you installed the Doomsday 1.3a patch instead of the HoI2 1.3a patch which is completely different. So you are running the Doomsday hoi2.exe file which needs those files but they don't exist in vanilla HoI2.

I have that happening even without that patches. One patch says hoi2_v 1.3a and the other says hoi2_v 1.3b-AI-Update.

There's the problem--and yet the game wants them.

Have you installed any other patches since you installed HoI2? Clearly somehow you have a Doomsday or Armageddon .exe file (if you get to the menu but get a message about missing spy_costs.txt when starting a scenario it's Arma). There's no other way it could be looking for those files. What is the datestamp on your hoi2.exe file? Try doing a Windows search of your hard drive and see if you have more than one hoi2.exe file.
