  • Rome Gold
I posted in main forum, perhaps it should be here.

Purchased Rome Gold - installed but won't run on my computer. Reinstalled several rimes same result. Installed on wifes laptop and it ran, so there must be something up with my computer. We both have windows XP - I have a Dell Desktop she has an HP laptop that is a bit newer. The register and update buttons for the game on both computers can not be used. Anyway, below is the error message I get when I try to start game. Again reinstalling as suggested does not work.

Started but crashes

Ok, even though my error message was different, after going through the JIT side by side fix that was posted, I am able to now load the game. As soon as I try to go to either single player or Tutorial options it crashes, displaying just color blotches and small bits of music. It is trying to do something, the hard drives runs like crazy, but you can't do anything.

I will try to find a few more things to do, but I have to agree with a number of the posts I have read. This was a poor job by Paradox. I have dozens and dozens of games. They should not have released a game with this many issues. Glad I waited until WalMart lowered the price to $10. At any price, this game is bound to drive many people

Does anyone have a fix? For the game I mean.

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files.

Thanks Scryder,
Reading the info it is hard to know if that driver (ver 9.8) will work as it suggests ahything after 9.3 won't work with the radeon X1600 series.
Other then that, I have noted on the threads that it is common people update their drivers etc and it still doesn't work. Also considering I can buy virtually any game and it works, it still seems that this particular game is a big problem for a lot of people. Rome Gold is clearly causing more trouble then it should. Add to that the register and update buttons can't even be activated, all the won't play posts, crash posts etc, Paradox put out a problem product. It should not require so many fixes if you can fix it at all.

Crap - i should have known better

Yes I should have known better - I dowloaded and installed the infor provided despite my comment about version above. Now I have lost everything. My computer will not go beyound 4 color display or 640/ I can literally not see much of anything. I have no idea right now how to undo, I just get message that because it is no longer supported by this version of windows. So display setting is locked and can't be changed.

So it looks like a lousy $10 defective game will now cost me the ability to play all games and the use of my computer for most everything else. As I said, I should have known better and only have my own self to blame.

OK update,

Thanks Gaute I couldn't find a 9.3 driver, but good news is that I was able to get my display working again by changing the settings for the monitor. Why I don't know the monitor had never changed, but at least I can now use the computer again, although I haven't been able to try my other games yet.

I did try Rome Gold - loaded to the menu screen, but locked up on the tutorial before displaying anything just stayed on loading city, hour glass was gone and mouse pointer came on, but that is as far as it went. Next tried again, hit signgle player and it just lockied up never leaving that the menu screen.

QUESTION: I should give up, but should I uninstall and reinstall the game now that the "updated" display driver (if it is working) has been put on?

Try deleting the FILES ONLY in the Rome /map/cache/ folder, and applying the new 2.2 patch.

I tried, it didn't work. Thanks to all who gave sugestions and tried to help.

At this point it would seem the prudent thing to do is just give up. I may try to uninstall and install one more time, but it seems unlikely to work. Reading all the problems and trying to fix leaves only one logical anwer. It is a poor product. Pperhaps just a bad batch of Rome Gold CDs were stamped, but I will be unlikely to purchase any game from Paradox in the future. Most companies issue their own fixes when they see such widespread issues. Most good companies have their own support instead of sending people to forums, no matter how talented and dedicated those forum members may be. Usually if a company puts system requirements on a game and you meet or exceed those requirements the game actually runs absent bugs of course. Maybe Paradox should send all people who registered Rome Gold a new game for free. The stores will not take open software on return, and I already returned it once for another of the same title only to find it defective as well.

Again thanks to all, it is appreciated. I will let you know if I end up getting it to work. The sour taste, lost $10, great amount of wasted time and near loss of use of the computer will fade in memory eventually. I really don't want go through it again however, so the best solution is to be very careful of purchases.

Bad CD

I too got my game from Amazon. I have a hard time believing it is a bad disk. I have had luck with previous Paradox games, and my son is big fan. He has several games. I do have a slight but easily resolved problem with HOI II.

There is something wrong with this product.

Like others I am going to install the older single version of Rome. I bet it works.

But didn't you say the same CD worked fine on your wife's laptop? If so I'm not seeing that it can be a bad CD at all.

But didn't you say the same CD worked fine on your wife's laptop? If so I'm not seeing that it can be a bad CD at all.

Actually No. What happened was the game at least loaded to the options screen on my wifes computer. It did not do that on mine until after I did the microsoft download for windows.

While the game loaded to the options screen on my wifes lap top, when I tried to go futher by selecting single game, it locked, failed to load and again caused major display problems that required a hard shut down and reboot to save that computer. I won't try again as I have no intention of causing major problems on my wifes computer for a poorly done game. As I mentioned before I play and purchased over 50 games. They work, this one doesn't. I do suppose that instead of a bad CD - it could be a bad game program, but considering some have said the original Rome plays on their computer, but Rome Gold doesn't, I thought maybe the CD was the culprit.

Either way:
THIS IS A BAD PRODUCT

So yours is a boxed version with a physical CD, not a download? That's a shame, the only fix I've found to this situation is to get Rome and VV separately, rather than in the Gold package. I would return it as faulty to Walmart for refund or credit, and get downloads of Rome and VV from Gamers Gate instead.

Thanks AndrewT, as I said I do appreciate all the help that was offered. Yes, this was a boxed Rome Gold CD purchased at Walmart marked down from $19.99 to $10. I think if I pressed Walmart hard they might give back the $10 but their official line at the stores is that they are not allowed to give refunds on open software. The only thing they offer is an exchange for the same title. I noted that several of the people posting problems on the forum also purchased at Walmart, but I have seen the same packaging at a few other stores.

Thanks again :)

Well I can only apologise on behalf of PI. I have attempted to bring this problem with Gold to the attention of the developers several times but have met with no success, I'm afraid, and I imagine their attention is elsewhere by now (I will add your case to the list though). Rome and VV bought separately off GamersGate cost $30 (vs $20 for Gold), I'll leave it to you to judge if that would be worth it for you.
