  • Naval War: Arctic Circle
James at Out of Eight Game Reviews (a great site for strategy game reviews) has received a copy of the NWAC beta for press reviews, and have already posted some of his first gaming experiences (the press embargo ended today):

We're working on tweaking that scenario a bit more; I think the time constraint is a bit on the harsh side.

Naval War: Arctic Circle Beta Gameplay Mission - "Show of Force"

I've enjoyed watching this. The only question I have are this subs spawn randomly so it will be interesting to play this mission again and again? Otherwise you know where the subs and it will be easy to find it playing the second time.

Trust me, it is not easy the second time, or the third :) You only know approximately where some of the subs are.

You simply will not find a sub in the Atlantic ocean without some clue where it may be.

But, yes, we have some random variation in unit positions.

I didn't:
(a) escort my ASW planes with fighters
(b) scout enough in advance using my AWACS planes
I found the one sub (which was easier because it was closer to the airfields) but didn't find the other, and got a lot of planes shot down in the process. The time limit didn't really do anything, because I was in trouble due to most of my ASW planes being destroyed.
But against the time constraint, I felt like I had to go and go right away :)

oh, it was YOU doing so awful job in hunting for the Red Octobers :)))) Yes, I was wondering why you don't use big awacs while I was watching the vid.

You simply will not find a sub in the Atlantic ocean without some clue where it may be.

yeah, I know it ( i'm good Fleet Commander player ). But I thought game/mission can give approximate coordinates ( with the radius, let's say 100km ) for every time it respawns new sub locations. Any way, I trust you when you say it will be interesting to play multiply times:)

Is there a similar 'sub position intel' thing in multiplayer? Or are submarines in those situations completely sekrit?
Unless the scenario you are playing explicitly tells you about where the subs are, you are not receiving any hints. Very sekrit!

So you'd normally just have to spread your sonobuoys liberally near your surface ships to avoid them getting in torpedo range, and be ready to respond when they launch missiles (ah, I think they came from over there....).

I have to say it looks like a lot of fun and Ill definetly getting the game when its released. Id really like a few more conflict areas but I guess that will be good for a next expansion. The Pacific would be awsome I think.

The only thing I bothers me is the low alitutde water texture. The white foam thats constatnly duplicated doesnt look too great when you see ten or more textures of it at once. A plain blue sea would be better imo.
