I get frequent system hangs on saving game, and sometimes on other times when disk is accessed while playing (e.g. loading the commanders)
This doesn't happen every time maybe 1 time in 4 when I save.
The save it's attempting to make will then be corrupted.

I've defragmented my disk but that hasn't helped.

It's normal that the system hangs for a while when you save and load commanders. Have you tried to wait a while?
Is the disk cable fit in ordinately?

Nope, you forgot; "Please help me…pretty please…with sugar on top :)" :)

I don't mean the 1 second pause when I access land leaders for the first time, I mean it hangs and I have to switch off my PC with the power button.

I've found that its completely stable in windowed mode, and only has this problem in full screen !

Strange

Try to rename avi folder to avi.old. set color depth to 16 bit. Restart after you hvae done that.

It's only when you save that the game hangs? Does autosave work?

Sounds very much like a video driver/AGP issue.

Have you installed the latest drivers for the AGP bus and your video card?

When you enter the BIOS setup and go to the advanced chipset section, what value is set for the AGP aperture size?
