The Beginning of the war:
The third world war started in the last weeks of 1937, when Czechoslovakia invaded Hungary and started a chain reaction of wars in the balkans that drew the allies, Soviets, Germans and finally Americans into the conflict. Hitler saw a great opportunity along with mussolini to make some quick grabs from his neighbors, and thus began dismantling Poland, Czechoslovakia and others nearby to solidify his own country as the greatest power on european mainland. Unfortunately for the germans, the Wehrmact wasn't ready for a full scale war. They had no real panzer or air force to speak of, and the land forces were still very much ill equipped to fight any kind of long term war. So when the Soviet Union turned the tide in the battle of minsk, where three german armies were completely annihilated, and the Italians joined the allies, after succesfully annexing Ethiopia, Spain, Greece and most of southern Yugoslavia, they were no match for the combined allied and soviet war machine.
The war for germany ended in the spring of 1940 when Hitler and most of his cabnet were killed trying to escape Berlin. This led to the almost complete disintegration of Wehrmacht communications, and several german armies were overrun before the germans now led by Rudolf Hess could broadcast an unconditional surrender.
The occupation:
Most of germany was outright annexed to the Soviet Union as part of the country as a whole, with the Soviet army patrolling the streets in every city, town and village almost 750.000 people disappeared within the first year of occupation.
In the Italian side of the occupation, things were much calmer, few people had the strength to resist the allied occupation in any way, and even welcomed the italian army as liberators, but there was no real rebuilding going on anywhere.
Soviet expansion:
In the spring of 1941, the Soviet Union launched an unprovoked suprise attack in the east. Their target: Japan and China. The Soviets hoped, that they could capitalize on the ongoing Sino-Japanese war that was bleeding both parties heavily at the time. After some quick gains in Manchuria, the soviets decided to expand their campaign by attacking the scandinavian countries through Finland, and also hoped to quickly annex the baltic states of Estonia and Latvia.
However, with the stiff resistance of the chinese and the excellent co-operation of the nordic countries, the soviet advance everywhere was stopped in mere days.
When the allies declared war to the Soviet Union, and included the nordic countries into the allies, the Soviets were suddenly in real trouble, and with their central european army mostly fighting elsewhere, the soviet forces were brushed aside like leaves.
The lightning speed allied invasion very quickly reached beyond old polish eastern border, and onwards. But as the weather now begins to grow cold, and the numbers of allied casualties keep rising, the advance, which is almost to Moscow begin to slow down. The Italian and French armies still keep making gains, but stiffening Soviet resistance is becoming a real problem.
The London Conference:
In the late summer of 1941, the delegates from Britain, France, United States and Italy gathered in London to discuss how to solve their Soviet problem. It was unanimously decided, that the people of Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia should be granted full pardon in their role in starting the second world war, and to cancel the war reparations imposed upon them. The hope was, that these former major parties in the other side of the war could start re-building and re-arming and would be later useful in defeating the Soviets completely. It was also decided, that Russia would after the war be dismantled into several smaller states, so that they would never again pose such grave danger ideologically or militarily, and to finally give peace in the world a chance, as most peoples of the world would then have their own nations and national identities.
So our story begins here, 18. October 1942, with the first national conference of the New German Democratic Republic.
Fall Phönix - Case Phoenix:
The first national conference of the New German Republic, or the "Fourth Reich", as some of the remains of the members of Hitler's government like to call it, is now in session in the old Reichstad under reconstruction. Every party and every political movement seem to have their own idea on how to rebuild the nation, and how to help the allied war effort. The Social Democrats advocate peaceful aid, and a large number of military hospitals and required industries to be built, while the German Independence Party wants to only concentrate on repairing the damage done by the war, and rebuilding the once mighty german industries. The Central party along with several other allied friendly parties say, that the german people, men and women of ages 16-45 should be immediately drafted, trained and armed to join the allied armies in the eastern front as soon as possible.
The conference lasts almost two weeks before a concensus is reached. In the end, it's decided, that Germany should first and foremost be rebuilt, and -industrialized while building an air force to bring extra firepower to the side of the allies in the eastern front.
