I've run across an issue where I'm forced, arbitrairily, to go to war with Greece.

In the fall of 1940. I am not allied with Italy, nor do I wish to be. I guaranteed Greece, hoping that would prevent my having to go to war with them. What happens is that either Greece mobilizes, or Italy declares war. Either way, I am given no choice in the matter - Italy is added to my alliance, and I find myself at war with Greece.

Anyone run across this? Any way to avoid it?

I let Italy have Greece, but I make sure I take Yugoslavia before Italy does. I keep Italy out of my alliance also, until she is at ar with the Allies, then I bring her in so I have military access and I can control her armed forces.

In real life, Italy's "campaign" against Greece made Germany to invade Yugoslavia and help in the greek occupation. This took valuable months from the preparations of the Barbarossa, maybe this lead to the ultimate german defeat at the east. So think it's a big issue, there should be an event about it.

I am not positive but is there an Event for DoW on Yugoslavia while playing Germany?

In my first games' testing things out with Germany, I usually attacked Yugoslavia soon after France falls so that I have more time to upgrade, gain troop and leader experience and get more resources and industry prior to Barbarossa.

I have seen Italy declare war on Greece prematurely and seen them get butt kicking too but every time I have helped Italy I get nothing as far as territory in Greece for my help, so I let Italy stew or die all together then go in and reclaim Greece, annex it and get the goods!

I also have seen Hungary go to war with Yugoslavia forcing me as Germany to intervene if I want to gain anything from it. Bulgaria sometimes helps out in Greece as well but not too often depends if they ally with Germany early enough to get any spoils on the border with Turkey or not.

Will admit it can be frustrating to see Italy go off half cocked thinking they are "Big Cheese's" (Mussolini full of cheese!) and trying to gobble up territory but then again in history they did try it and failed, so its no wonder that Italy is more of a nuisance then an ally to Axis.

The problem isn't that Italy attacks Greece, really. I don't much care what they do. The problem for me is that as Germany, I'm forced into the war, and into taking Italy as an ally. I usually prefer to keep Italy out of my alliance as they do tend to go off half-cocked. I'd rather the allies devote resources to handling Italy, so I can then come in later and gobble up large stretches of Italian territory.

Anyway, I think this is a problem when Italy gets added to my alliance without my agreement.
