I am playing Portugal in the GC.
With Portugal, my play style is peaceful colonial development.

I recently had to honor my military alliance with Spain (a good alliance for Portugal) and had to wage war against Denmark, and then against Netherlands.

Both wars went well and I achieved peace with both with a gain of provinces (which was a mistake), which I was not really looking after, especially in the case of Denmark (Netherland colonies do interest me).

The problem is that my Empire now encompasses most religions (except Orthodox), and I would like to get rid of my sole protestant province, situated somewhere in Norway, about which I don't care at all, and which keeps on revolting (I cannot keep all these different religions happy together).

The province is currently in rebelion, but the rebels don't control the city and they have no hope of succeeding in the siege (level three fortress). I have even stopped sending troops to squash the rebels there, in the hope the province will gain it's independance...

Any idea about how to get rid of that province ?

If the province has less then 5000 citizens, you can send your colonist there and convert them to your true faith. If there is more then 5000, you can 'clean' the city of extra citizens: just keep sending your troops there, they will kill off extra population. And set tolerance to protestants to zere to make them revolt even more.
There is a possibility that Norway will gain independance, but that might not happen.

here my take on this
if the population is less than 5000, convert them
if its a little greater, maybe let them rebel and kill them off til they're less than 5000 (tho i personally don't like doing this)
my favorite option, let them rebel and ignore them
worst case scenario is they form their own country (tho depending on the province, this won't happen) Best case, they get rebel controlled and stay that way and destabilize neighboring provinces by increasing their revolt rate.
if the neighbors are busy quelling revolts, they can't bother you as much.
