If you have any questions on the dates and relationships of the various rulers of any (and I do mean any) state in Europe and most of Central Asia, you could of course send your requests to me. For the last few years I've been working on cataloging all the rulers of the nations of the world with an eventual eye on publishing them. I've got much more info on the rulers of the areas I've worked through than that site.

Freelance - mainly to relieve the boredom of being stuck up here in Cincy when all my friends are down in Louisville. I at first only wanted a good list of the rulers of the various states on the island of Great Britain, but once I was done with that I decided that I might as well do some work on rulers of Ireland as well, and, well, it just kinda cascaded from there...:) I really need to get my act together and try and get it published, but have no idea about how to get started (I fear that all I would get back for sending in an unsolicited manuscript would be wonderful form rejection letters  ). If you (or anyone else) want anything, I have actually entered into my computer some 419 pages listing the rulers (and their interrelationships) of some 722 states in the British Isles, Scandinavia, the Iberian Peninsula, France, the Low Countries, Germany, and (part of) Switzerland; I can send information from these files right away. I also have innumerable other pages concerning the rest of Europe and much of Central Asia in manuscript form that I haven't got around to typing in yet.

Crook - what all do you have? Maybe we should get together and compare notes? I would especially be interested in your Central Asia stuff (I'm working on this area now), as I've only got a couple of good sources and would like alternative information to compare to what I have. And any information on Afghanistan would be nice - for some reason there's been a run on books on that nation in recent months and it's hard to find anything even on medieval Afghanistan right now...

And as a general message - I would be greatly appreciative towards anyone who can find me good lists of the heads of the Swiss cantons before 1789, the mayors of the various German Imperial Cities (with the exception of Lubeck, Hamburg, Bremen, and Frankfurt which I possess - I still need mayors for Lubeck and Frankfurt before 1500 though), and the podestas of many of the northern Italian city-states in the 1300 and 1400s.

Demetrios,

I was mostly digging in Central Asia, Russia (of course), Persia and Turkey, and to some extent Mughals, hence the Uzbeks ;). Anyways, if you need any info on any of those Central Asian Khanates, I'll be glad to share. It's hard to get good books on the region, considering there is a lot of stuff on it in Russian (duh! :D ), but not available in the US. I really like that region, and really want to go there one day, but at the moment it's sad how everything turned out :(

I would recommend talking to some professors of history. Find someone relatively prominent (i.e., publishes regularly in academic fora, but not at the popular level - no Stephen Ambroses :)) and email him or her. They could probably tell you if there's a market for such a book, who to contact, and how to go about doing it.

Just don't send them a copy of the manuscript. You never know how deep academic ethics go (again, in reference to Stephen Ambrose ;)).

I know all about the problem of things being in Russian  . It's amazing what one can get out of books in Spanish, French, German, and Italian - but since I was only looking for names, dates, and interrelationships, it wasn't too hard to extract useful information out of books in those languages. When it came to Russian, however, as I don't know the alphabet and never learnt even the rudiments of any Slavic language, I was completely lost. Hmmm... I'd be interested in the Russian stuff as well as much of my stuff on Russia came from a single source and I'd like to corrobrate it. PM or email me ( trinschler@fuse.net ) if you want to compare notes. :)

NOTE: It's really irritating at times being a moderator. :) I inadvertantly hit "edit" instead of "quote" on your post Crook, nad I accidently inserted my reply into your post! Luckily I didn't do any real damage...

Well, you have it easy then. Republican leadrs is where it gets complicated. Nothing like doing the rulers of the Roman Republic and having to deal with two consuls a year for just short of 500 years. Of course, that doesn't include random dictators...

So which states have you done monarchs for?

Most of the world actually, including some fairly minor feudal fiefs in Europe. I've used the Regnal Chronologies website mentioned above to complete a lot of my data, although I've noticed that the website has errors in some cases (such as incorrect references to dynasties and such). I've also used various online noble genealogies to fill in my data. I'm now in the process of reorganizing my lists a bit by more specific geographical areas. Oh, and I also list the ownership of particular areas at times when they didn't have local rulers. If you mail me at solmyr@kolumbus.fi I can tell you in more detail what I have.
