Since 1.0 there has been a Pretender Rebel in Gotland at the 1444 start date. This rebel is to reflect the historical event of Some Guy who made Gotland into a private domain and base for piracy. Historically it wasn't until decades later that Denmark reconquered Gotland.

When 1.0 was released there existed no Gotland tag, so a pretender rebel was the best choice to pick. Nowadays we do have a Gotland tag, and I suggest that this rebel should be made into a nationalist rebel.

The reasoning behind this is that Some Guy historically never invaded the mainland, but instead ruled Gotland independently. Thereby, by changing the rebel into a nationalist rebel, he will secede from the Danish realm and indeed create his own nation to rule. Since nationalism didn't exist as an ideology in the 15th century, there is nothing wrong with making a seperatist into a nationalist rebel. This is both more historically accurate, and from a game-play perspective allow Gotland to exist for a couple of decades until being reconquered by Denmark or an independent Sweden.

”Some guy” is the recently deposed king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. He also still a had substantial support at least in Norway.
Not sure pretender rebels or nationalists really covers it well tbh. :)

Also the Gotland tag has been there since release. It guards some of the game’s less well kept secrets.

Erik av Pommern were never really intrested in staying in gotland forever, his main hope was to restore the union, and later to just secure as good future for himself as possible. In 1449 Karl Knutsson Bonde managed to bribe him to leave Gotland, but just when he was about to surrender to the swedish forces, Christan I made a better deal and Erik in the end departed for Pommerania there he would live out his days fairly well off.

What I would like to see is Gotland starting off independent (not because it was it's own country) but to represent Erik as a political force and not a mindless army walking into the danish arms at game start (as off now).

Erik during his time in Gotland did rule it independently for about 10 years, he tried, but failed to gain any significant diplomatic support from other countries and time and again negotiated with both swedes and danes. Having him around independently could be really interesting and fun, giving him special mechanic to restore himself to the union throne if he manages to retake Copenhagen.

So... why not make them Nationalist Rebels and, should they win, get an event to enthrone the man and give Gotland a Restore Union on Norway?

Because having them as nationalists don't make sense, having them force independence for Gotland. Erik's goal was restoration of the union. The reason why I suggest starting off Gotland as independent is not because I want Gotland into the game but because I want Erik as a playable character/country, and the possible pirate faction. Even if Gotland then were to succed in conquering denmark, it wouldn't be for Gotland to be union leader, but Gotland would become denmark then.

Look at the name list I copied in my first post, the name list is kind of weirdly composed for a gutnish kingdom and I'm pretty sure it is the name of developers they put in as an easter egg.

What about an event where if they don't succeed in enforcing demands after a certain amount of time but aren't defeated an event fires that removes them and creates gotland with the same ruler?

if you can not play as Gotland then from gamestart I find it pretty pointless.

Restore the union is just going to mean they will get them as pus. There should be some cb for merging nations though.
Or an event that has Gotland immediately inherit Denmark if it manages to restore the union. Yes, this would be a game rule breaking snowflake treatment, but perhaps one that might be justified because it deals with a situation that is present at gamestart and it is implemented specifically to allow for a quite interesting and challenging start as Gotland.

yes twoflower is completly right on it, Gotland (if made independent) should have a free CB on denmark, but be able to become denmark (merge) comparably simply. I'd suggest it be enough to oocupy Copenhagen (which is of course not easy for a small country to do at start) with the added requirment that it has to be done as long as Erik of Pommerania rules Gotland. Erik was a childless king, he wanted his cousin (I think it was) to inherit the throne. The cousin in question died while Erik was on Gotland (in the 1440's) So Erik should start with no heir and infertile. If he dies it should be fairly likely through event to remerge Gotland to Denmark (or sweden) I actually don't remember who officially owned denmark before 1440, since the island frequently switched hands.

I like these suggestions of an independent Gotland from start. I think it could easily be solved with a unique CB, peace option and a couple of events.

It would mechanically be like the Burgundian inheritance, with events triggered by Gotland winning and enforcing the unique Peace Option. The only difference is that Gotland would immediately switch to Denmark and move its capital, by event.

Since a Gotland victory would trigger an event, the player could even be given some fun choices. Perhaps stay independent Gotland, but inherit only Sweden, or perhaps stay as Gotland and simply break the Kalmar Union and loot their coffers (the "Yarr! You Are A Pirate" event option)?
