How is it possible to edit names and how they are given in the game? The reason I want to know this is again to find out if triggers can change/edit/update character names in the game as to align the game more towards the true roman naming convention with a prenomen, nomen and cognomen (and later even agnomen). Also to distinguish families (Cæsar, Marcellus and so on) and gentes (clans: julii, clauidii and so on)

Ex:
Gaius (given name, prenomen) Julius (clan) Cæsar (name of a family line within the gens).

Agnomen (victory titles etc.
So if a general goes to war and conquers an entire region. A trigger would fire when a character conquers more than 4 provinces in a region (lets say germania) and naming him Germanicus, adding it to his name at the end.

Cognomen - branch/line within the clan
This in order to change loyalty in family members that share the same cognomen (direct family). As you would suspect that your immediate family has a tendancy to be more loyal.

Adoption renaming
Presuming a fix is made so adoption is made easier a character would also change its name to fit the gens (clan) or cognomen (family). Gaius Octavius adopted into the Julii clan and Cæsar branch would rename him Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus.

/edit
Oh and one more thing. The abillity to have the senate bestow you a title as a trigger you can accept or deny. Or perhaps even when a ruler reaches a certain level of prominence (as dictator or imperator) a decision should be enabled that lets you choose a agnomen for your ruler, such as 'Augustus' and so on.

Marrige of you daughters can be a tiresome affair. Sometimes the daughters of the ruler marry a guy and then he becomes the preffered heir (according to law) and many in your staff prefers another. Therefore it should be a trigger that prompts you to decide wether or not you allow this. Then if its a prominet and popular character she wants to marry some of her would-be husband prestige would flow to your ruler/ruler family. Her objective could be to marry and if you keep denying her that she would loose loyalty and so on.

Does anyone have ideas, stuff to add?

First question: the names are given in common\cultures.txt. Basically, if a character is born in a certain family he will take the gens and the cognomen of his father (normally; there is a bug which makes this stop working sometimes) and the game assigns him a random praenomen--not an entirely historical approach, but it works well enough in a gameplay sense.

There is no way to track the cognomen of a character, nor is there any way to change a character's name through events. So you might give a character the title 'Germanicus' or somesuch, but it wouldn't change his name as far as I can find. Likewise, adopting a character changes his family attribute, but I don't think it changes his name. Someone who has played a monarchy (with all those bastards being born and maybe adopted by the ruler) might be able to answer that more accurately.
