I'm playing the free version (base game), though I recently ordered Space Race, but my current game was started without it.

I got the Last War mystery, and had a great game yesterday.

The Last war turned out to be a real challenge. Apparently, since I had plenty of food in the early game, I had neglected the food supply a bit (I guess it was going down slowly for w while, but nothing to really worry about). Then the war struck, refugee waves arrived, food went down a bit more, I supplied resources to my sponsor; I was surprised by the retaliation from the other powers on earth. The orbital bombardment took out one of my two shuttle hubs (I had few defense lasers, so during the time it takes for them to recharge a lot of enemy missiles made it through), so it became hard to build farms, and hard to distribute the food. Then I got the event that disabled the fungus farms for 5 sol. I was low on electronics, so it took very, very long to rebuild the shuttle hub.
At one time I had over 200 starving colonists. The deaths from starvation added to the war tension. Coloniusts started to kill themselves, too. Fortunately, I had lots of stored machine parts, and some exotic metals, so I was able to end the war by the Grand Push, quickly once that option became available.
So far, this was the most challenging moment for me in the game (first playthrough for me, sponsor is Europe).

P.S.: I built a total of two shuttle hubs, can't build more, wonder if that is a bug or working as designed.
P.P.S.: I seemed a bit weird that Mars tourism continued through the war, though. At some point I brought tourists to Mars, mostly to get those 22 food per rocket, to help make it until the next harvest.
