Style: gameplay with some narration.
Using mods: WW1 v1.0 then I'll mod vanilla to reflect state after WW1. And of course I'll use custom start in later half of my game. I hope that in this AAR Greece could do better than it did historically.
Note: english is not my native language so you really should expect some mistakes. Of course I will correct them if you show me.

Chapter 1. Everything has the beginning: Constantine.
8o54O76.png

Crown prince Constantine was alone in his cabinet. He stared at the big map of Greece on the wall. It was warm spring midnight with lots of stars in sky.
His wife was sleeping and even servants left his quarters. So he had to light candles by himself.
It wasn't the first sleepless night for him. In his early 40-s he began to understand that his youth was ended. But still he was far from feeling old.

The map was very detailed. It even had small icons of greek troops and ships:
KyOdFQt.jpg

Constantine talked with himself:
- Why we are such 'pretenders'? We pretend to be heirs of Roman Empire, we pretend to have big army - we even create 5 corps for it, we pretend to have great fleet. But turks have most of our lands, our army is just simple infantry with little artillery, and our fleet... Let's say that Baseleos Georgios was one year older then me, and Basilissa Olga just two years younger.
- We spend lots of resourses on such useless things. If we want to achieve something - we must change.

Yeas later Constantine recalls this night as the turning point, his Rubicon. He worked till morning without any rest. Although many details wre still missing, but the plan was ready.
Suddenly he heard light footsteps. His wife stood near window in the morning light.
br6im7f.png

Constantine sighted. He knew that Sophia, being proud daughter of Hohenzollern house, would fiercly object versus his intentions.
But he made his decision: future of Greece depends on Great Powers. And Germany is very far and, honestly, useless. Despite his warm feelings. Greece, not Germany, above all.
The die has been cast.

Even before going to the old king, Constantine went to the most influencial man in Greece. Elefthérios Venizélos.
250px-%CE%95%CE%BB%CE%B5%CF%85%CE%B8%CE%AD%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%92%CE%B5%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%B6%CE%AD%CE%BB%CE%BF%CF%82.jpg

After Goudi coup Venizelos became the most powerful politician, the head of government. But Constantine hoped that they can work together.
The meeting was surpirsingly short and effective. They discussed Constantine's plan for just one hour. And after that Constantine and Venizelos became at least temporaly allies.

First steps.
On this same day Venizelos aproached british ambassador with offer of friendship. Greece wanted to join Entente - alliance of Britain and France.
Of course everyone understands that such decision couldn't be make in near future. But at least Great Powers accepted such intention.
0uGoBo1.jpg

Next one was political change. Both Constantine and Venizeloz agreed that cabinet was quite good.
2nbjKnS.jpg

Only one possible change was made - they appointed Ioannis Metaxas as Chief of Staff.
With new Chief training of new units was changed. Greece didn't have enough time. Changes should be made quickly!

Because of the new law the newest ship could be considered ready for duty - but Constantine didn't want to spend supplies and men for it. There was no sign of war, so he decided to postpone her career.
Next was start of formation of a new mountain brigade. There are more hills and mountains in balkans than plains, so it was obvious choice.
8kfYY6H.jpg

Future of Greece depends of improving technologies. Shamefully, Greece was very backward in every field. But first priority was civil one: agriculture, education, science and industry.
9SieXy9.jpg

And the last of May Reforms was new Order of Battle. Constantine was appointed as Field Marshal. Old ships were decommissed:
Hx2GtB9.jpg

3 corps (just officers) were disbanded with regiments moving to A Soma Stratou and B Soma Stratou.
9tPmUaz.jpg

It greatly helped with budget burden.

And so it began.

Chapter 2. Peace.
Eleutherios Venizelos.

DfpJnCP.png

After meeting with crown prince, Venizelos was shocked. Although he respected Constantine, he couldn't imagine that they would work together. He always saw royal family as aliens to Greece. But now prince earned prime minister's trust.

While Constantine was busy reforming army, Eleutherios was searching for new trade opportunities. And found some:

Pyn8ffa.jpg

T4Ve7bT.jpg

8AzxF2L.jpg

Thanks to these agreements, resourses stockpile was slowly rising, as money in treasure.

At 31st of May Venizelos received report from his Minister of Security, Emmanouil Repoulis.
eavV6xf.png

It was very laconic: "Found 15 spies. Made them stop".
RjRp3xe.jpg

It would be another 18 in June, 12 in July and 10 in August. Then - almost no one.
Venizelos perfectly understoodd this situation. Is there any place so lovely as Greece in summer? Of course every clever spy would prefer to spend time here!

Whole 1910 was about improving state of country: agriculture technics, supply production management, education level, industry technologies.
Only in 1911 Greece started to research some military tech:
w29P9M6.jpg

It made paramount to improve tactics (especially about coordination - letting units attack faster) and infantry weapons.

At that time turks were very busy falling apart. Another albanian uprising:
eV0nw19.jpg

In later part of 1911 there were some international news.
First was some scientific discovery:
prUjwLZ.jpg

When Venizelos read about it, he realized that although concept of 'Atom' was invented by ancient greeks, right now his country could't even dream about making scientific wonders.

Second event was more important:
hEEln6Z.jpg

World was on the edge of war between great powers. It became apparent that Germany didn't want to preserve status-quo. German Empire desired her place in the sun. But it could be only taken by force.
And apparantly Greece would need to adapt.

P.S.By the way, it is my 500th post :).

This is an interesting setup, I'll try to keep an eye on your AAR, good luck!

Interesting AAR. Did you actually take the time to mod all the ww1 pics, info, portraits?
Thanks for joining!
Nope, it is from WW1 mod

By when do you expect the war with the Ottoman Empire to go off?
Quite soon. First Balkan war was in 1912.

What are your short and long terms goals for this campaign?
Short term: fulfill Megali Idea (recover historical Greece lands)
Long term: make Greece superpower

Chapter 3. Prelude to war.
Venizelos.

sbbdyGf.png

Excerpts from the diary of E.Venizelos.

30th of September, 1911.
Great news: Italy declared war on Ottomans.
yGu1vwX.jpg

Italians want Lybia. I could only hope that turks would lost. Our war is unevitable.

19th of October, 1911.
Italians proved that they are quite capable. They take Ez Zauia near Tripoli and now trasporting more troops to the front.

30th of October, 1911.
Good progress of Italy in Lybia:
DZFJ4GD.jpg

They encircled Tripoli and now storming the city. Good luck to any who is fighting turks!

14th of December. More good news from Africa:
iDmyfPm.jpg

War is Lybia is almost over. Ottoman army is no more.

5th of January, 1912.
Ottomans are weak. We should be ready to attack soon. We just need a good distratction and, hopefully, good allies.
Today I persuaded Constantine to finish our new armored cruiser 'Georgios Averof'.
Greek_armoured_cruiser_Georgios_Averof_in_the_1940s.jpg

Amazing ship. She is quite capable of killing any turkish one.

When I talked with her captain, he compared it to our latest 'the best ship', Hydra:
n4v9VCb.jpg

Clear supriority. Pity, that we couldn't afford more.

2nd of March, 1912. Italo-turkish war is over.
dEaWlNW.jpg

And Admiral Pavlos...
Yqy02gE.png

He is now a hero. But it was a very risky. I just hope that Constantine understands bids.

14th of March, 1912.
At last we are united by common cause!
zs7yGqa.jpg

Historians definitely would call it 'The Balkan League'. Every european nation which is opressed by Ottomans now ready to fight back.
Today I am sure that this war wil end in victory.
With both serbians and bulgarians turks are doomed.
But now we must be twice as careful as before. We should show as not as agressors, but as victims of medieval opressor.

31st of March, 1912. Independent Morocco is no more.
DgZ0Pa4.jpg

Great Powers are eager to fight for any piece of land. Sovereignity? Independence? It is just a word now. Only one matters - could you dare to earn your place?

24th of April, 1912.
There was big meeting within our Academy.
yixTZfs.jpg

Now we are not such backward country as we were 2 years ago. Our production lines are quite modern (although there are too few of them), education level is rising, and even some scientific discoveries are made.
But it was possible only because of postponing military research. I made clear that is should be changed as soon as we can.

1st of May, 1912. Another greek thing out of our reach.
3QoKjyr.jpg

Of course we will attend! It is the matter of nation honor!

August, 1912. Our allies are mobilizing:
tieqkHq.jpg

Xi7FlV4.jpg

They are so eager to fight. But we must be calm. European public opinion is very delicate thing. We must earn their trust as peaceful country. They will not like a bully.

20th of September, 1912. Great news!
q2O3O2w.jpg

I don't have any doubts - it is the opprotunity we are waiting for.
I sent telegrams to Serbia and Bulgaria. They are ready. Crown prince went to troops on turkish border.
Soon, very soon we will start to return our land and liberate our people.

9th of October, 1912. War has began.
GD9zV0S.jpg

It started from small skirmishes on Montenegro border, quickly excalates to Serbia and within two days we are all in state of war.
No turning back.
Freedom or death!

There goes round 1 of the many Balkan wars. Drive the Turks back to Constantinopel!

Chapter 4. First Balkan War.
Constantine.
K4iLkCe.png

Crown prince was already with his army when the war was officially declared.
Back in Athens, Venizelos too was very busy enacting new laws for state of war:
TMJfuh2.jpg

But Constantine concentrated on battle strategy.
Although allies had clear advantage over turks, prince understood that this war wouldn't be the last. Thus turks should not just be driven from Europe. Allies should deliver such heavy blow to Ottomans which would criplle them and eventually kill their state.

So he decied that his plan must be about making big encirclements that should completely destroy turkish main forces.
UIcJ0o5.jpg

A Coma stratou with only infantry will go through Katerini directly to north. When they meet bulgarian forces they create big encirclement of the whole turkish army in southern Serbia.
B Coma stratou (mountaineers) will create small pocket between Greece and Albania and then will proceed to crush trapped forced in Serbia.
A Coma Stratou will have one more goal - encircle city of Salonica and rush to Thrace with hope to create another pocket.

First batlles were almost bloodless. Disorganized turks run as soon as they saw greek troops.

zhnLpbq.jpg

Constantine was finally happy. Everything he dreamed about was becoming true.
His army was clearely superior to turks. And nothing could stop his men.
With liberation of Morti greek recon discovered an ottoman fleet in Kerkyta. Admiral Pavlos Koundouriotis made his move to intercept turks in sea.

Turkish soldiers runs for their lives from any encounter.
And even wheh they decied to finally fight:
HGYrY1c.jpg

It won't last long. These 3 soldiers were first greek victims of this war.
Constantine decided to personally send letters to their families.

But ottomans were not without teeth. With surprise attack they occupied some Montenegro's territory and made them capitulate:
zdGcrg4.jpg

It was first alled defeat. And last one.

Constantine marched north with his men. Everywhere greek peasants met him as liberator.
hmzGzkA.jpg

Just after 5 days Constantine's troops created small pocket (with turkish HQ) in Ioannina and continued north without almost any resistance.

But still there was time for future plans.
Venizelos' new laws greatly improved economic potencial of the country so Constantine could persuade government to fund new project - modern british destroyer.
OgEUnxi.jpg

With Greece location strong fleet is not a luxury, but a question of survival.

2 days later Kerkyta greek division finally arrived in Kerkyta. Turkish fleet runs from incoming troops:
8tOIVSj.jpg

But then it was a pure bad luck. After clear sunrise it becames hazy. In thick fog ottoman ships passed greek blockade and went south. When admiral Pavlos understood his failure he ordered pursuit. Alas, all efforts were in vain. Finally sailors from ironclad Psara saw some smoke ahead:
9jg4233.jpg

It was old ironclad which obviously was left to give chance for other ships to escape.
Battle was short:
votsis.0.jpg

On land Constantine's troops finally meet ottoman most fearful warriors:
nwANaOw.jpg

But even they couldn't match greek attackers. Being out of supply clearly couldn't help them. Battle was won even before reinforcements arrived.

20th of October was fall of Ioannina.
oELZm8F.jpg

Turks (officers and staff from HQ) surrendered to Constantine himself:
gGsSDzM.png

Crown prince decided to send officers home. They didn't kill any of his soldiers so he thought that some kindness in war couldn't be bad.

Just one day later Constantine's first objective was achieved:
MVZIF7D.jpg

Big encirclement was made. 2 infantry divisions, 1 cavalry brigade and 1 HQ was cut from other ottomans forces. Allies began closing pocket.

Turkish army was such horrible mess that one greek division could effectively assault 4 turkish divisions including cavalry!
eWNllze.jpg

24th of October greeks and serbs finally finished first pocked.
XKdVQ8f.jpg

About 12000 turks were captured.
Recon showed that ottomans were desperately trying to stabilize front in eastern Macedony and Thrace agains Bulgaria.

But they didn't know that it was one big trap:
4ymM3cV.jpg

6 full divisons were encircled in Kavala.
Turks had big fleet in Smyrna, but still Constantine gave order to fleet.
With artillery suppory of armored cruisers, greeks and bulgarians easily destroyed resistance and captured almost 50 thousands turks!
09pw7j3.jpg

After great victory in Kavala England and France were shocked. They didn't want allies to finish Ottoman Empire completely. They pressured every government with direct warning of possible intervention.

While negotiations were conducted greeks made Salonika's garrison surrender:
ZcuMWLT.jpg

Constantine ordered military parade in liberated city:
9aPAmCi.png

After just one month of the war turks were almost driven from Europe:
VCAQkzB.jpg

But then shocking news came:
ZRDdW3C.jpg

Great powers declared that if allies want to continue the war, they would intervene.
Constantine was feeling betrayed. After such great hopes being forced to stop was a heavy blow for him.
But he understood that Venizelos and king couldn't refuse. Treaty of London was implemented.

Of course it was still huge victory. Greece expands north with the important city of Saloniki being integrated in country.
MwcmU4R.jpg

Whole november greeks were celebrating this victory. But even then Constantine knew that this was just a beginning. There will be a new war and he had to be ready.

I was very surprised for such rare historical turn of events.
First: picture of turkish officer surrendering to Constantine is authentic - and made about capture of Ioannina.
Second: turkish ironclad Feth-i Bulend was really sunk by greek ship in 1912. And this picture was made about that event!
Third: picture of Constantine in Thessaloniki was authentic too.
For me it was the first time in paradox strategy when game copied real history :).

sebas379, although we could even take Constantinopolis, but great powers made us stop. Constantine surely will not forgive it.

KyrionMyrthar, welcome!

Chapter 5. It is not peace, it is an armistrice.
Venizelos
8qlJ5Kd.png

Although we were stopped before complete victory we still won huge territory.
The most valuable gain was the port city of Saloniki:
v5mrH7Z.jpg

With factories and big population it helped Greece with production and research.

Speaking of which, Venizelos was quite proud of greek universities and engineers:
zbE7uv1.jpg

mb4Gzlf.jpg

pSr5rb5.jpg

NsCymII.jpg

West had his own problems. For example, suffragates:
HvR2lTr.jpg

Venizelos though that may be being poor country is not such bad as it seems. At least women were busy in fields trying to earn their bread, not on streets, demanding some political rights.

Everything was quite and calm, but suddenly on 18th of March, 1913:
ke8l5Ej.png
mAHVrgx.jpg

Old king didn't have any bodyguards. So it was easy job for killer. It was said that Alexandros Schinas was an alcoholic vagrant, but it was only for public.
Venizelos personally supervised the investigation. It wasn't hard to track connection of Alexandros back to both Ottomans and Bulgaria, but then investigation was stopped.
Both countries refused to cooperate with greek police. Of course, it could be cosidered as casus belli. But in private consultations ambassadors of England, France and Germany strongly advised agaist a new balkan war.
Again Venizelos was made to stop. Again he promises that it was the last one.

Death of King was a national tragedy. Government decided to honor George with the greatest funeral Greece ever knew.
omYWTT1.png

The King's body was taken to Athens on the Amphitrite, escorted by a flotilla of naval vessels. For three days the coffin of the King, draped in the Danish and Greek flags, lay in the Metropolis in Athens before his body was committed to a tomb at his palace in Tatoi.

King Georg is dead. Long live king Constantine!
axPKze7.jpg

At that days Venizelos and Constantine I had a lot of meetings.
5yIzA92.png

They both understood perfectly the burden of resposibility for the whole country. And their love for Greece made them good friends.

After funeral was over, Eleftherios decided, that it is a good opportunity to promote unification with Crete:
VrScyMq.jpg

uHPnoxq.jpg

With annexation of Crete Greece received new units:
YCH4mGV.jpg

2 garrison brigades and infantry division were considered useful and put on guard in Irakleio.
All headquarters were disbanded rasing officers level to 107%.

In april a new mountain equipment was researched:
WJI9E6p.jpg

In spring army finished formation of 2 new brigades: mountaineers and cavalry. Venizelos asked England for their plans of transport ship:
Acgsv2P.jpg

After last war relationships between former allies had been deteriorating very fast. Everyone was hoped to gain more and simply turned over past friends. Bulgaria wanted Macedonia which now belonged to Serbia and Greece. Because of a mutual fear of surprise attack Venizelos made an alliance with serbs:
zSaJHtk.jpg

And it was not a moment too soon!
Next day bulgarian ambassador arrived with a short letter. Second balkan war had began.

I really like your effort. I was considering to do something similar in the past, but starting from Victoria II (1836) all the way to the end of the 20th Century. I wish we had East vs West so we could play Greece after 1945 as well... The modern days are so much interesting.

2nw0o6a.jpg

And here goes Balkan round 2. Does Bulgaria get dogpiled by all of its neighbours as happened historically or is it just Greece and Serbia?
