This game is nothing short of breathtaking .... AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED IN MULTIPLAY, THAT IS!! Me and two friends of mine have spent 2 very frustrating evenings trying to actually get an internet game going. We're all using the German 1.05 version. Fifty percent of the time one of us wouldn't even make it past the loading screen. Then if we did using the chat funktion (shift + F12) frequently caused a CTD. Or sometimes the game would just crash for no good reason at all. I don't know just how many times one of us CTD'd but I stopped counting at 23. WTF??!! I don't mean to sound ignorant to the problems of programming a functioning multiplayer game, but you guys really need to get a patch out that fixes the network code, because as it is now this game is barely playable. :(

We did play directly through IP, never used vnet. And we actually decided to use the chat window only in case of an emergency, because we'd gt kicked out so often. And even without it with we'd sometimes get CTD's just out of the blue, something that never happened to me in singleplayer mode.
We all have a cable connection by the way, and we live within 2 miles of each other. Anyway, thanks for replying.

that shouldnt happen and it can be avoided as can most of the problems with EU MP- the problem is that they take time to work out.

Try using TAB instead to chat.

Make sure that you when you change the countries in the host window that everyone is present, and if anyone joins after then you will need to rehost. Otherwise the client computer gets confused as to it is talking to .

The chat bug had really gone away. I only experienced recently when people had changed their versions or were using STOLEN versions. I'm busy today but if you want to run a test with me next week then I'd happily oblige. just ICQ me

Ben

Elisiar, I think that would kick ass. :) (IF we can figure out how to get rid of 'em stupid CTD's, that is :(). My ICQ# is 81515908.

Don't worry, I do have that much common sense. ;) Oh, and nobody is using STOLEN versions here. The frigin thang cost me 49 Euros (money well spent IMO ;)). But I still think this game is badly in need of a patch the fixes MP, because I'm quite sure that we did everything right and it was in fact the game's fault that one of us got sent to the desktop every 5 minutes. ;)

Shift-F12 + Tab call the same function in Eu2, and ultimately, both crash just as often. But what I've found is that chat crashing doesn't happen much, if at all, so long as you're hosting a NEW game from a scenario, or if you're loading a save, make sure everyone reclicks on their shield once the last person has downloaded the save.

John, you know what, the Tab thingy actually helped, lol. It noticeably cut the amount of CTD's, seriously. :) Yeah, I know it calls the same function, I was thinking the same thing. But it really did help. We still did have a few CTD's, but nowhere near as many as before.

I suspect you're not running a controlled experiment, so I'm suspicious. More likely, from my experience, you've modified some other component that affects game stability, such as you're reclicking now, or something, etc.

I have to agree with Red Ant on this one. I love the game but the MP version is a complete lash job and needs a total make over. The pity is that most games I buy I usually play more MP then SP but as of v1.05 EU2 is just not functional enough for me to bother with playing MP.

A lot of the problems may also be because of modified files (things like the EEP mods, etc will hamper MP play) - if you have an unmodified or clean reinstalled copy of EU2, with the latest patch, it crashes a lot less.

I've been using a fresh install with the latest patch and no mods but it still crashes all the time. I have a cable modem, 1.5 Ghz CPU, and 512 MB of PC 266 memmory so I'm pretty sure it's not me system. I follow everything in the newbie guide to MP and try to only play with west coast players but the game still crashes all the time. The worst part of it is that sometimes after the game has crashed I can't restart EU2 (even after a reboot) and I am forced to reinstall the game inorder to get it working again.

The game shouldn't be corrupting files so often during crashes and the game should be stable enough that I can play 10 minutes without it crashing. There is no other explaination other then EU2 MP was a rush job which wasn't properly play tested. These problems should have been fixed in EU1 why are they still happening in EU2?

You seem to be the only person having such catastrophic results. The reason I know this is that I play EU2 MP all the time.

Ergo, the issue is on your end.

Check your drivers.
