Welcome to my second AAR where I play the Hanseatic League in EU1. My goal is to unite Germany under Hanseatic flag as peacefuly as possible. Here you can see the starting map. I don´t have any CB, but Denmark and Poland-Lithuania have CB against me. In the begining I will try to make many royal marriages and alliance with northern german states to annex them later.

Hallo at the end of twenties in 16th century.

My situation isn´t bad. I have promoted some officials and upgraded all forts. I also have arranged royal marriages with 3/4 european countries and traded maps with Mameluks, Persia, Portugal and Spain. I made alliance with Hannover and Brandenburg (now they are both my vassals) and with Saxony and Hessen. After vassalisation of Hannover and Brandenburg I added Thuringen and Kleves into my alliance. You can see that I would like to unite Germany peacefuly, but I don´t know yet, what the Protestants will do with my tactics. I am thinking of just one war - with Denmark. I want to get Jylland province in the future (they are strong now). So, have a look on my map and think about some advices, please. :)

Diplo-annexing in Germany pre-1600 can be pretty difficult due to the Reformation and Calvinism. Also, you still get nationalism after diploannexing, so you'll have to watch that as well. I recently played a game in which I was unifying Germany by any means necessary - ended up with only one diploannexation (Hessen, which I annexed after it went Protestant).

I think, if you CAN, try to diploannex both Brandenburg and Hannover before they go protestant. If you do this, then you'll have pretty much territories, be strong enough to attack Denmark, and, you may even try going CRC. It's a weird tactic, but it worked for me in my game as Saxony. I had about 1/2 of Germany, and converted to CRC. My rel. tolerance was VERY low for protestants and reformats. They revolted much, I waited for the pop to drop down to <5000, and converted them with settlers. Try to do this.

Conversion and War with Poland

Hallo again. I started my unification of Germany with anexation of Hannover. But Protestantism was there and I had to deal somehow with it. On 1st February 1528 I decided to convert fom catholic to protestant faith. That broke my relationships with all catholics so I started to build new with protestants, especially with Hessen (I even vassalised them later). With protestantism I also started to build my colonies. The first one was Isle royale in North America. Catholics didn´t like me, especially Poles and they declared war against me (and my allies Hessen and Thuringen) with Russian help. The war was terrible and I was losing 2 provinces in one moment. I paid Russians for peace, but still, there were Poles. I didn´t want peace for territory so I asked my bank for some loans to build army to drive them back home. At the end of the war I was in huge debt, but I signed white peace and my ally Thuringen even received Eastern Prussia. You can see political map of central Europe after this war.

Hard times and Consolidation

Well, I went bankrupt. And not only one time, but 5 times (I think). I had to improve relations, rebuild the army and finance building of my colonies (Isle royale, Suwamba and Martinique) and trading posts (Bahrain, Cochin and some in Africa). I also built two factories. Now everything is OK again except Reformism which I don´t like. On one side I lost my vassal Hessen, on the other hand the Neatherlands made good barrier agaist French and Spanish armies. So, I am vassalising again and I hope I will be also diploannexing in near future. I would also like to increase my colonies. Look on political map of central Europe and give me some hints, please.

My idea for you would be very simple: try to vassalize some protestant countries (Brandenburg, Saxony, Thuringien), and after the EoT, try to vassalize some Catholics (Bavaria, Kleves, Cologne).

Also, you seem to be spacing your colonies out to avoid attrition to your navies. May I suggest the following:

colonize St. Helena (nobody ever bothers it really)

capture, if you can, Zanzibar (It's already settled up to city; you only need one colonist to convert it. Serves as a great midpoint between the Atlantic and India) this might not be needed - I forget where Suwamba is.

for Indonesia - Timor usually goes ignored, should be available, and it has low-agression natives.

Long period of silent expansion

I started this period with stable protestant country. I expanded my trade through Europe and the Middle East and got some monopolies. I aslo slowly went on with vassalisation and diploannexation (firs Thuringen and now Saxony). Now I have strong alliance of almost all protestant nations (Hansa, Kleves, Brandenburg, Bohemia and Wurtenberg). With Edict of Tolerance I made royal marriages with many christian non-vassalised countries. Other very important event came with my conquistador. I sent him to America to explore. Those explorations allowed me to change maps with the Neatherlands and England so now I know many parts of the world. I built many trading posts (about 15 in Africa and some in Asia and America) and also some more colonies (2 in Africa for my ships to rest during Europe - Asia journeys). I now have 3 CoT in Holstein, Danzig and Suwamba. Look at political map of central Europe to see my situation in 1610.

So what to do now? I would like to dipploannex Brandenburg as soon as possible, than try the same with Bohemia and Wurtemberg. And after that I will probably declare war against Hessen and later also against Baden and Bayern to annex them all with weapons. And with diploannexing of Kleves I will have united Germany. And I will surely become colonial power during that time. Nice idea, isn´t it? What do you think, will I be succesful?

A very good idea. Just wait that Bayern and Hessen aren't in strong alliances.
BTW, I would like to know how the situation in other parts of Europe is? As I see, Hessen has annexed all of Palatinat. But who has Cologne? How is Italy going? How does Russia? I would really like to know.

Bayern is not in any alliance and Hessen is allied with the Neatherlands. Spain is very powerful - they annexed Savoy, about third of east France, almost all Portugal (ex. Tajo) and vassalised Venice. Cologne is part of the Neatherlands. Turkey is also strong - they now own half of Venice. In the northeast there is strong alliance between Poland and Russia and there is no Teutonic order, Courland, Prussia and Pskov in the game anymore. Now I dipploannexed Bohemia and Wurtemberg and waiting for annexation of Brandenburg. Than I will attack Hessen and get at least Munster province to be connected with my vassal Kleves to annex it. And Bayern is also waiting. Now I am the second in victory points (after Spain and before France and Turkey) so I see my unification of Germany in bright colours. :)

The 17th century is almost ending. And what have I done yet? Well, you can see my half-united Germany (Hansa, Hannover, Brandenburg, Thuringen, Saxony, Wurtenberg with non-german Danzig and Bohemia). In the world I have many new colonies and tradig posts. I completely colonized more than half of Indonesia, all Indochina, Taiwan, Tahiti, part of american West coast and Enkan in north Asia. I am now upgrading some colonies into cities. In near future I will try to colonize Asia north of China. I built shipyard, so I get 2 colonists yearly now. But I discovered one big new problem - possible badboy wars. In 1659 I had 30 points and now in 1865 I have 27 points. I am afraid I must postpone all planned wars and annexations. I also made strong alliance with Russia and Sweden. In near future I would like to add China into this alliance. In western and southern Europe are many wars going on, mostly France (they now have more than half of Italy with Rome) against Spain. Austria annexed Bayern and is now very strong. My other problem is that I don´t have any leaders (only 2 conquistadors and an explorer and they all are not suitable for wars). So now, I behave extremely peacefuly. But in the future? Who knows, I still have more than 100 years in the game.

June 1751

Well, the time of my game is going on. Now I know that I am not able to unite Germany - unfortunately. How is my situation now? The map of Europe is almost the same as it was in the last post. Only changes are: Hungary is annexed by Poland, Moldavia is part of Turkey, England is divided into many parts owned by several nations and France owns almost all Italy with free route from Brest to Napoli. In the world I colonized north Asia from Kamchatka to Ural with some good resources and the island of Madagascar. Nothing else is now avilable. My researchers and builders are doing very good job - I heavily upgraded my forts and built all kinds of factories all over the world. My diplomacy goes the same way as 80 years ago. I am allied with Russia, Sweden, Hessen and Kleves without any war for centuries. But I still have high badboy number (20) - because of my former annexations. What to do in the future? How to end the game? Well, I will probably attack and annex Baden (they are not in any alliance, just vassals of Lorraine). But that will be all, because I don´t want to finnish this interesting game in huge badboy wars. What do you think about it?

I'd look at everyone else's BB values. They only gang up if yours are the highest. By this point in the game Austria or France should have much more than 20 or 30...

Game over

So I have finnished my second AAR. It was very interesting to play Hansa but unfortunately, I was not succesful with my goal to make only one german state - Hanseatic League. There are 2 other (Hessen with 4 provinces and Kleves with just 1 province) and part of Germany is annexed by Austria (Bayern) and the Neatherlands (Cologne). On the other hand, the german colonization is so huge. I was also the best in diplomacy. I think that more military activities would probably destroy my country. I still have badboy 27, because almost at the end of the game I annexed Baden and 2 provinces in eastern Africa from Turkey (I was at war with them for about 15 years during and after my annexation war with Baden - kind of BB war an tis was the only way to stop the war, to annex this territory). Look on the map how Europe looks like at the end of the 18th century.

You don't get BB points for those Turkish provices as they are Rest Of The World
