Besides running a large empire leading to a drought of characters, it makes it very unappealing seeing families completely disappear into irrelevance, and making the game have 1 family per state should make simulating interests of large empires less predictable. Visiting other states lets Rome become relevant for everyone who wants to make connections, and a more stable basis for characters being located in places should tell better stories then mass extermination of families into minor characters.

Also please have default spare characters get placed into temporary positions that are empty (with transparent portraits so we know we didn't place them) for things like building projects and government positions.

Could you explain your suggestion a little bit more? I don´t get most of your points. Yes it happens that one the families looses most of its members, but by this time you usually have 4 or 5. And I do not get why having only one family would make empires less predictable. Most of the times it is the relatively large power base of the heads of the families making things interesting, by having only one you would eliminate this. And I don´t understand the characters visiting other states point.
