Okay, here's what's happening:

I'm King of Sicily. Croatia has been really aggressive and has a chunk of Northern Italy. I want to become King of Italy. I decided to take over Croatia peacefully. I married one of my family members to the King's eldest daughter. They had a son. Perfect! He's first in line for the throne. (Though I've already had to assassinate one son he had in order to keep my family as the successor.)

So, what's the problem? I got confused over who I married to the Croatian King's daughter. It was supposed to be someone in my direct inheritance line, but it's actually my current ruler's first cousin thrice removed. I think. Cousins confuse me. (His grandfather and my ruler's father were brothers. I think that makes my ruler and the Croatian successor cousins thrice removed.)

Anyway, the point is, he's nowhere in my inheritance line. Any ideas on how I can rectify this? My first inclination is to appoint him a vassal and switch to elective law, but that's a really risky idea that might fail. (Especially since half my vassals aren't related to me.)

Assassination isn't an option right now as Tomislav (heir to the Croatian throne) has a bunch of younger brothers, and I'd gain a LOT of BB for knocking them all off (along with his father) and remarrying to someone more suited. My current ruler is 5th successor to Tomislav, so I suppose I could kill the 5 people in front of me and then Tomislav, but that'd also be pretty awful for my reputation. Even with my current piety (4100), it'd still take a while to recover, and I'd probably have revolting vassals left and right. Speaking of piety, I'm also papal controller, but I don't think any of my papal abilities will help with this.

Any ideas? Anything? I'm really stuck here.

Be careful about wiping out entire dynasties. Lots of things can go wrong.

I agree on the elective law idea. As Wilson says, if you have any ducal titles, load it down on your favorite. Just keep in mind that if he inherits Croatia, first, he takes his Sicilian land with him. Then again, he may inherit later if you keep a salic or semisalic law.

Croatia always seemed to have salic primogeniture (like France) and so was not possible to inherit, though they might have changed by event.
