I've installed the latest patch for Doomsday (not for the regular game). It seems to happen more often in combat than not. My screen says HO2 has stopped working, etc.

Just to confirm - you're running Doomsday v1.3A and the checksum (four digit code in top right hand corner when you start the game) is JCJS ?

If you've installed the game in Program Files I'd suggest you uninstall and reinstall into another folder eg games\doomsday

- locate the folder called AVI in your doomsday install and rename it to something else eg AVI-OLD

- run unpatched Doomsday and make sure it's stable. If it is, install the 1.3A patch, verify checksum, and see if it's stable.

- if it still crashes you could try setting compatibility to Windows XP SP3
